Who's the next AFL punter?
By Joseph Hess on Thu, 07/10.2010
With the success of former Geelong captain Ben Graham and North Melbourne/Collingwood goal kicker Sav Rocca and the recent addition of Chris Byran from Collingwood / Carlton to the NFL ranks, I think more AFL players will follow this trajectory into the US when they finish their careers.
Ben Graham plays for the Arizona Cardinals, Sav Rocca for the Philadelphia Eagles and Chris Byran has recently signed with Tampa Bay.
NFL players make a lot of money, so the lure of cash would be a key motivator for many AFL players.
Who are the next potential AFL players to convert to NFL after they finish their careers at home?
Dustin Fletcher – Stating the obvious but the old Essendon veteran would be the most likely current player to switch over. Fletcher is known for his long kicks and certainly would be picked up by an NFL side if he wanted to make the switch after his career ended at Essendon.
Brendon Goddard – I don’t see him switching any time soon but maybe when his career is coming to an end, he might switch to the NFL. He has a bullet like kick and can roost the ball a prodigious distances.
Tyson Goldsack – He brought back the torpedo this year when kicking out of defence, a bit like Goddard, I don’t see him making the move any time soon but I reckon he could be a possibility later in his career.
It has been reported that “Former NFL special teams coach Gary Zauner had travelled Down Under to see what other Aussies had to offer†in 2009, and I reckon he will be keen to make a return trip this year to see what the Aussies can offer.

i remember when chris bryan
i remember when chris bryan was playing for the mighty blues, the greatest team in history, and was pleasantly surprised to find out that he's now Tampa Bay's punter since that's the NFL team that my family supports. so thank you joseph for putting a smile on my face, and may the big tip pay you lots of money for it!
NFL players make a lot of
NFL players make a lot of money, but not the Australian punters. When Ben Graham started his salary was $230k, it's now risen to $700k and he is outstanding. Rocca's starting salary was $285k, it's now $470k. These numbers are not too much different to what an AFL player earns now the dollar is at parity, average of which will probably be around the $300k mark this year.
In a recent Ben Graham interview he reveals he has been receiving many enquiries from Americans looking to see if they can get into the AFL. I think it's possible many Americans that can't get a chance in US sports will start coming here. Shae McNamara could set a trend.

Dustin Fletcher would not
Dustin Fletcher would not make it in the NFL..look at his size, he's disproportionate, gangly, thin, not very agile. Just reads the play & kicks well...that's what's made his afl name. Not big enough...rocca/graham/bryan...all units.
Nice article. Daniel Rich

Daniel Rich would be a good punter IMO.

I recall a story on channel 7 news during 2008, on a break where West Coast was loosing to Port Adelaide. The Q was rumoured to be having chats with NFL clubs about being a punter. Just something I remembered.
