It was six minutes of magic that turned a desperate physical duel into an impressive Geelong AFL finals victory.

In some ways, the Cats' 14.14 (98) to 9.13 (67) qualifying final win over Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night was the reverse of their loss to the Hawks in the 2008 grand final.

And Hawthorn's loss was compounded by a suspected knee injury to star forward Lance Franklin, who limped off during the last quarter after landing awkwardly in a marking contest.

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson confirmed Franklin, who won the Coleman Medal with a 71-goal effort in the home-and-away season, had suffered a knee injury.

"I dunno how bad. We'll just have to wait and see, he'll get it scanned tomorrow morning probably,'' Clarkson said.

"It didn't look great.''
