LeCras' record dozen sinks Bombers
By Damien Riley on Mon, 19/07.2010The West Coast Eagles' rare win away from home against Essendon Bombers will be remembered for Mark LeCras' record breaking 12 goals - the highest amount of goals kicked at Etihad Stadium.
LeCras was inspirational on Saturday night, dominating the game with 22 disposals and 12 marks to go with his 12.2.
Bombers coach Matthew Knights was left helpless as LeCras dispatched several Essendon defenders including Heath Hocking, Dustin Fletcher and Nathan Lovett-Murray.
The Eagles' John Worsfold rated Mark LeCras performance amongst the best in the history of the club, but was also pleased with the steps forward made by the team recently, especially in Melbourne. Other impressive West Coast players that were dominated around the ground were youngster Ashton Hams with 18 disposals and 3 goals, Matt Priddis with 33 disposals including 9 clearances and veteran Andrew Embley with 25 touches.
Knights, who has copped a fair amount of criticism over the last few weeks, said as a senior coach he expected and was prepared for another torrid week after his teams' 6th straight loss. Knights stated, "I've just got to be able to absorb that and be resilient. It's similar to last week, front up, do what we need to do, work with the players - it's not about me, it's about the Essendon Football Club and the players."
Essendon key players Jobe Watson, Patty Ryder and Brent Stanton had little to no impact on the game, and only youngster Travis Colyer with 26 disposals and 2 goals was the only player to put up sustained resistance.
The Bombers will need to regroup this week before they face the in-form Kangaroos at Etihad Stadium who are pressing hard to make the finals, whilst the West Coast Eagles return back to Subiaco with a big spring in their step to play the out-of-form Blues, who are facing a real chance of not making the 8.
