In-Form Fevola A Credit To Himself
By Matt Marsden on Sat, 27/08.2011There's an old saying in footy, and it goes 'when you're hot, you're hot'. At the moment, ex-Carlton and Brisbane spearhead Brendan Fevola is the hottest commodity going around the VFL.
Fevola, who continued on his path of destruction with a 10-goal haul in Casey's belting of the Northern Bullants on Saturday, now brings his tally of goals to 43 in the last six rounds at a whopping average of 7.2 goals per game.
It's an incredible turnaround for the once troubled superstar whose AFL career seemed all but gone just three months ago.
Now, after finding form following personal complications earlier in the year, a fairytale comeback to AFL is starting to look more and more probable.
The most obvious change in Fevola in 2011 has been his willingness to work on the flaws that saw him be traded by Carlton and have his contract terminated by Brisbane.
Since signing with Casey, Fevola has applied a dedication to his football that I have not seen in all of my years as a Carlton supporter. As I watched him disect the Northern Bullants forward line, Brendan appeared to be having a lot of fun out on the football field. Amongst all the draft rumours and 'will he, won't he' talk, it's great to see a once troubled footballer find his feet and enjoy himself on the football field, even if it is at the expense of (my VFL team) the Bullants.
However, although Fevola appears to be approaching his footy with a new sense of vigour, I worry for his ability to control himself as an AFL player.
I believe the secret to Brendan Fevola's VFL success has been the time Fevola has been given to really think about both his life and his love, football, and what he would do without it. Although he is obviously seeing the game in a new light, I hope for his sake that he doesn't get too comfortable, assuming he does get picked up by an AFL team.
Just on that, surely an AFL side would take a chance on Fevola. He is clearly the best forward in the VFL, and maybe even still in the AFL (let's not forget that Fevola is a dual Coleman Medalist), so surely a side such as Melbourne, Greater Western Sydney or the Western Bulldogs would be interested in acquiring his services to bolster their forward halves.
It would be a magnificent success story if Brendan Fevola were to pick himself up from the brink of despair and find himself on an AFL list in 2012, but for now, all Fevola needs to do is continue doing what he is doing, and that is kicking goals, winning games and having fun on the footy field.
