How Important Is A Coach?

It has become common practice this millennium to sack your coach if things aren’t going well, it must be their fault, who else could be blamed! But is changing a coach the answer, are they actually that important?

At an AFL level each player has their own position coach and on top of that they may have a goal kicking coach. They are scrutinised via video and given hours of practice a week to improve their technique or game plan. When a team starts playing badly you don’t hear the fans asking for the midfield coach to be sacked or questioning what the ruck coach is teaching his players, are we expecting the coach of our team to simply be a coach of his coaches?

Coaches also get the raw end of the stick if their team is doing well. Comments such as “but he has a good list” or “my Grandma could have won a premiership with that team” often underlie the difficulty a coach has in convincing supporters that he had something to do with them being a quality side. Was John Buchanan in the right place at the right time or was he a quality coach that helped outstanding players gel as a team.

Is coaching as simple as knowledge and respect? If you think of your favourite coach that you played for, did they have knowledge and your respect? Leigh Matthews was able to guide Brisbane to three consecutive premierships, a man full of knowledge and respect, if he asked the players to jump, they would ask how high. Teams recently have removed coaches because ‘they lost the players’, is that simply a failure of respect? Are teams appointing assistant coaches from Collingwood and Geelong because the players will respect the success they have had?

Coaches at an AFL level have changed in the last decade. No longer are they the coach, they are well and truly the manager, we just don’t want to call them that as it is too much like Soccer. They have to worry about the players, the assistant coaches, more coaches, the media, the board and of course the spectators. Could this explain the trend of ex AFL captains returning to coach their side? They have the experience of being the leader, they don’t need to know how to teach someone how to spoil or to kick a goal, just manage and control the situation. It could also explain why Mark Thompson doesn’t want to be a ‘Manager’ of an AFL team; he wants to be the coach.

Is a coach important? Wrong question. Is the manager of an AFL team important? Ask the six AFL teams that decided to change their head coach for 2012.
