Load Gun, Point at Foot, SHOOT!

By Amos Rojter on Wed, 21/07.2010

Here we go again. Another of sport’s characters is given the boot. Jason Akermanis was today sacked by the Western Bulldogs for being exactly the same person they signed up in 2007. It will be a great loss for football. Jonathon Brown is now the only true remaining character in AFL football.  He is outside the mould of the media savvy, straight down the line prototypes, being manufactured at AFL clubs today. There is of course Brendan Fevola as well, but he is best placed under the banner of ‘raving lunatic’.

Love him or hate him, Jason Akermanis has been an integral part of AFL football for over a decade now. Fans have loved watching him on the field.  He was something different, someone no other player could quite replicate. Sure he polarised many with his incessant media presence, and tendencies to tackle/create controversial issues, but he is exactly the kind of character the AFL needed. A player people both love and hate is a draw card, no doubt about it. Shane Warne was just the same. The Australian Cricket Team was perhaps denied potentially its greatest cricket captain ever, because Shane Warne was a little too alternative the conservative powers that be. He was still invaluable on the field, as Akermanis' experience would be for the Dogs come finals time.MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MAY 07: Jason Akermanis (C) of the Bulldogs runs with the ball during the round seven AFL match between the Melbourne Demons and the Western Bulldogs at Melbourne Cricket Ground on May 7, 2010 in Melbourne, Australia. One can only feel that with six weeks to go, and still within reach of a flag, the Bulldogs may have made a big mistake here. If all goes according to plan, the Dogs should finish in the top four. If this happens, they have a playing list that can cause some damage. As good as they look on paper though, experience still counts for a lot at the pointy end of the season. Who has experience in September? Umm, lets see…what’s his name, I can’t think of it….he has mismatching facial hair…a jaw that never stays still….oh yes, JASON AKERMANIS!

Akermanis may well be that fine line for the Dogs, between premiership success, and further Western heartbreak. We cannot assume to know what has happened behind closed doors out at Whitten Oval, but surely the Dogs need all the experience they can muster. They are up against Geelong, Collingwood, St.Kilda and possibly even a rampaging Hawthorn, none of which equate to a walk in the park.

The majority of Bulldogs fans are angry about Akermanis’ sacking.  SEN radio station was inundated with calls, a majority in support of Jason.  Comments on articles in The Age have been mostly against the clubs decision. Did he really do anything wrong?  The club knew from the outset that he has a presence in the media after all?

It is done now. We have lost another character of the game. Love him or hate him, he is the kind of personality that is needed in sport. Who is going to stir up controversy now? The AFL needs someone to stir the pot and keep them on their toes. However outrageous his comments were, they always promoted healthy debate in a public forum, and that is not a bad thing is it?

Do you agree with the sacking? Have the Western Bulldogs just shot themselves in the foot? What would you have done?  Comment below.

Comment below on your thoughts - Aker was one of a kind, did he deserve this?

What has he done since the

What has he done since the Homosexuals in AFL story? Nothing they are prepared to say. Makes you wonder that the club has tried to gag him full stop. And he won't agree. From a football point of view they are a much weaker club without him.

Yes. Despite his nagative

Yes. Despite his nagative story on Homosexuality in Football, it promoted healthy discussion on the subject. Is this a bad thing? No premiership since 1954, and a sniff of adding one in 2010, is this really a wise move?

It was all about aker after

It was all about aker after the club suspension, don't be surprised though if he is running around at gold coast next year

anonymous user's picture

It has always been all about

It has always been all about Aker though hasn't it? What has changed? I agree, he would be a pretty handy addition to the new Gold Coast team, and may want one more season to prove the Dogs wrong?

So what if hes a character of

So what if hes a character of the game does that make him exempt from following team rules like the rest of the club?? People have to relize he was not sacked for being outspoken and having an opinion but for betraying the trust of the football club. He lied to the club and had no respect from his teammates. The club had no other choice. The club is finally united as one now and are a better shot at the premiership then before

Fair call, although this all

Fair call, although this all transpired from him being outspoken. There are obviously two angles to take here, and both are valid, I guess we shall see how the team fares in the coming weeks...the Dogs knew what they were getting in 2007 though, it didnt matter back then as they wanted his experience, why does it matter now?

anonymous user's picture

Aker also knew what he was

Aker also knew what he was getting back in 2007 too. I'd be shocked if back then if the Bulldogs didn't tell him then that they will only recruit him if he follows the teams rules. Its a two way street. Anyway you look at it Aker brought all this on him self, if really truly wanted to play for the Bulldogs in the remainder of 2010 he would be.

I'm sorry but i believe the

I'm sorry but i believe the club has really got this decision all wrong.. in a nutshell i don't think there was any other of his media releases that stirred debate or controversy besides the homosexual article.. I still think that players should be entitled to a THEIR freedom of speech as EVERYONE is entitled to their opinion..
Ok it may not be the opinion of the club, but as long as its published as the PLAYERS opinion and not the clubs and does not bring the club into disrepute then WHATS THE PROBLEM??
I just really hope that the "powers that be" havn't got the shovel out early for all us members and fans to see..

It's great to see a variety

It's great to see a variety of perspectives being put forward here, keep it up. So far in my coverage of the whole situation, more people seem for Aker than against, is this suprising?

Just Shattered!!!! This is

Just Shattered!!!! This is not how the Battle Within should end!!!!
An out right Champion deserves respect..
