However, Saturday comes and this all changes. They swap their suits and coffees for skins and Powerade. They stuff down Weetbixs and Subway preparing for the battle ahead, regardless of grade, sport, or skill level.
‘White line fever’ is a term chucked around from time to time; this, as the majority of us know, is very much real. They are the heart and the soul of their chosen codes. AFL, NRL, AFF, NRU; these weekend warriors do their code proud. Riding bumps, fighting on through the worst of weather conditions. Rain, sleet and hail can’t stop the hardened weekend warrior. They don’t have state of the art recovery centres, just a cold beer and a schnitzel after the game. They play because sport is the life blood of our nation. When you line up on Saturday or Sunday beside a man in his late 30s or a kid in Year 10, you get a unique feeling that sport is really something unique and special.
I am proud to call myself a weekend warrior and I admire and respect the men and women of our nation that, week after week, grace the field of battle. They are the warriors of our sports codes and they exemplify the passion and power of sport in our country.
For the late nights in the emergency rooms, for the Sundays on the couch bruise-covered and sore.
