The Sydney Swans have secured a thrilling 13-point win over West Coast at Patersons Stadium adding another famous game in a sequence of close finishes these sides have had over the last decade. The start of the game was something to forget, with the ball spending as much time out of play as it did in.
Both sides were unable to move the ball past each others 50 metre line and the ball just floated around the middle of the ground. The quagmire was later cleared and Ben McGlynn found space and hit Jesse White on the chest to bring up the game's first goal.
Jack Darling's heavy early tackle led to the ball spilling out to Quinten Lynch who found himself with some space and he ran inside 50 and slammed home the goal. After a behind to the Swans, the Eagles set about getting the ball down their own end, only for Selwood to first mess things up by choosing the wrong option.
Selwood would get a reprieve as Heath Grundy was unable to run onto the loose ball, and he managed to use the right option. With Lynch now lining up for goal, he put through his second, making the scores level.
McVeigh put the Swans back in front by a point which lead to the kick-out blunder that saw Nick Smith able to run onto the ball and put the Swans out by 7 points. After a quiet start to the game, Dean Cox found himself able to set up Lynch, who would miss. Matthew Rosa brought himself into the game by leveling Rhyce Shaw with a heavy bump.
Lynch again failed to kick his third for the quarter, but all eyes were on Nic Naitanui who managed to bring the ball down from the ruck, with 5 seconds remaining and kick a big goal leveling the scores at quarter time.
With the Eagles blowing early chances in the second quarter Ben McGlynn made them pay by kicking a goal, putting the Swans back in front. The Eagles, again with poor disposal and no talking, made a meal of things in the middle and the Swans, through Adam Goodes, went 11 points ahead.
The Swans then turned the ball over themselves for the second time in the game and this time Quinten Lynch was more than happy to punish them, kicking his third. Jetta put the Swans back out to 11 points with one of the goals of the year.
The 11 point lead was short lived when Lynch put through his fourth for the game, and then a freekick to Andrew Embley saw the Eagles back in front. It was a lead that was only short lived as Shaw kicked a goal making it yet another lead change in this game.
The Eagles were unable to find any accuracy heading into the half time break and it was a 3 point lead to the Swans. Ben McGlynn kicked the first major of the second half and when Jude Bolton goaled, the lead was out to the largest of the game.
Brad Ebert kept the Eagles in the contest by kicking his first for the game and when Josh Kennedy kicked his goal, the Eagles were piling the pressure on the Swans. West Coast's sub Andrew Gaff brought them within one point of the Swans with his first goal in AFL. The Eagles went into the three quarter time break with the lead when Dean Cox managed to kick a goal.
Luke Shuey extended that lead in the last quarter with his goal. The Swans closed the gap yet again when Jesse White found Adam Goodes with an overhead handball which led to the goal to see the lead cut to four points. A free kick to Dean Cox from the throw in would see the margin back out to ten points.
Another sub, another major impact, this time the Swans' Gary Rohan was on the other end of a high kick inside 50, and would keep the Swans in the game. The Eagles gave away another free kick to West Coast, this time to Selwood, and Selwood went back and put the Eagles twelve points in front.
Jesse White put through his third goal of the game and cut the margin back down to the six points. Adam Goodes made it all square at Subiaco and brought in the speculation of the first draw between these two teams, as well as the third of the season. But new Swan Andrejs Everitt had other ideas. After being held, he went back and put the Swans back in front.
Andrejs Everitt kicked two goals in the game which included the goal after the siren to give the Swans a 13-point win over the Eagles.
