Is Tom Scully's Betrayal Really A Bad Thing?
By Amos Rojter on Tue, 13/09.2011Kevin Sheedy has done it again.
Tom Scully signed up with Greater Western Sydney Giants, turning his back on the besieged Melbourne Demons for the promise of bigger meals for his wallet. It had been rumoured for weeks that Scully would head to Sydney, and now the decision has sparked a steady stream of shock, horror and self-rhetorical questions from Demons supporters, but why?
Melbourne supporters need to get a grip. AFL Football is a tough game, in which one's career can end at any moment. A bad knee injury, or the ailment of simply having been overrated as a youngster, can quickly cut a career short. Clive Waterhouse has big raps on him when he entered the AFL, as did Marc Woolnough for Geelong. David Schwarz was up there with Wayne Carey as a top centre half forward, and Shaun Rehn was the best big name we had ever seen, before injury hit. All these players lost earning power in the back half of their careers. Tom Scully has made a sensible decision, financially, and given himself security. It is not impossible that he might have a career threatening injury, or worse, simply not be good enough!
There is no longer any loyalty in AFL football, and fans need to accept this. A club is bigger than a player, and Scully’s departure opens new doors for not one, but two or three new players, via the compensation. Who knows, the Demons may have just traded one good player for three great players. Let’s not forget that Jack Trengrove and Jack Watts are still at the club - great young talent to be building a club around? They may even be better than Scully; perhaps his defection will spur them on?
It seems unlikely that Melbourne will be challenging for a premiership anytime soon. It is not like Tom Scully has given up premiership glory for the right to light his cigars with hundred dollar bills. For this reason, it is quite a different scenario to the Gary Ablett Junior one of last year. Surely Melbourne cannot get any worse than this year? Their development hinges a lot more than solely on the likes of Tom Scully, who is largely unproven really.
The Giants have got their man, but will he be the knight in shining armour they crave? The club now has Callan Ward, Tom Scully and a bunch of players who were on the verge of retirement, if not for one last pay day from Kevin Sheedy. They are seemingly collecting more experience on the field than Gold Coast did, but will this translate into success, or will it just mean the club physiotherapist will be racking up lots of overtime? Will Scully be to the Giants, what Ablett has been to the Suns?
It is no doubt deflating when your team loses young talent to a new club the AFL is helping set up, but at the end of the day, Melbourne will still be better next year, and even better the year after. And like Geelong, losing Scully may in fact be a blessing in disguise. The Giants will be crossing their fingers that he becomes the superstar everyone predicts, as yet, he is just a young kid who has shown some promise. Whether that is enough to warrant such money, time will tell.

Great article, Amos. When you
Great article, Amos.
When you sit back and look at it, Melbourne appear to have won out in this deal. They will receive two first round draft picks as compensation and could land two absolute superstars, not to mention they can focus using the picks on areas around the ground that are crying out for new, young players.
The pressure is solely on Scully now. He has to perform for the duration of his contract or he looks like a tool. Gary Ablett Junior is the sort of player that is able to lift a team - Scully is no leader yet.
Exactly, Melbourne can hold
Exactly, Melbourne can hold their head up high. Massive gamble from GWS, they could have thrown that money at plenty of other established AFL players.
Will be interesting to see how it pans out, but all hope is not lost at Melbourne, that's for sure!
Good work @BrotherAmos...
Good work @BrotherAmos... indeed Scully going could well be a bonus for Melbourne.
Interesting also that
a) Loyalty is an issue for Melbourne, who though little of J. MacDonald. They despatched him nicely, seemingly without thinking of loyalty.
b) Scully was about to fall off-contract, yet chasing Malthouse and Ross Lyon (who have contracts) is not an issue.
Players and officials will do what is in their interests, and Clubs the same.
Fans need to accept that the only loyalty they should have is to the colours and jumper. All else can change.
