Eagles Have No Plan B

By Christoper Perrella on Sun, 10/04.2011

Eagles fans, John Worsfold's reign is quickly coming to an end.

After two wins including a promising display away to Port Adelaide, fans' expectations came crashing back to earth and another year of heartache with Sydney providing the first worthy opposition (and top 8 side of 2010) for West Coast in 2011.

Watching the game from the members' Subiaco wing, I, along with the fans, were looking for continual improvement in disposal across the field. Four quarters later and it was the Eagles we have come to expect - missing standing targets, handballing to the opposition and stop-start attacks.

Andrew Gaff's injection as the sub - Worsfold's one sound move of the game - served to show that he needs to play a full game, his run and carry proving the tonic for the stale Eagles run. Jack Darling showed other teams they may be regretting overlooking him in the draft with another solid display across half forward.

John Worsfold showed he has not learnt from the changes in modern football, out-coached by the fresh face in John Longmire.

The Eagles lacked any semblance of run and carry football. When kicking long to a pack of Cox and Naitanui failed, Worsfold had no Plan B.

Sydney, on the other hand, have transitioned into Generation Longmire, their token tackling and ferocity supplemented by some silky skills introduced by the young Bloods. They will find their way to another finals campaign in 2011.

Worrying was the omission of Brad Sheppard to a manful Eagles defence in dire need of a running half back. Conversely, Longmire stood by Andrejs Everitt, the former Bulldog, who repaid the faith kicking two goals and being used further up the ground.

Worsfold needs the kids to repay the faith and quickly.

Ebert continues to dispose poorly, Masten is worryingly injured again while Tom Swift floats idly in the WAFL.

Throw in an aging Mark Nicoski and the serviceable cattle of middle men in Rosa, Priddis and the Selwood brothers and the signs are not good, especially when the elder players (Cox, Embley) can't play much better.

The opposition don't get any easier.

Next is Hawthorn (top 8 in 2010) away, then Melbourne at home who will regain Tom Scully, the Red-hot Bombers at Etihad and then the Western Derby.

Suddenly a possible 3 wins from 3 could quickly become 2 wins and 5 losses.

Extrapolate that to the half way mark of the season when Worsfold will get a thorough review of his position and they could realistically be staring at a 3 and 8 record.

Worsfold needs to delve into the WAFL ranks, find some players with speed and precise ball movement and give them game time. Otherwise, he may only be two months from being dumped.

To the anonymous comment re

To the anonymous comment re "bullshit opinion" I would appreciate if you would point out which parts of the article you disagree with, thus allowing debate.

To claim it was written to achieve some "door prize" is highly offensive and incorrect, something which will be backed up by my subsequent articles on this website.

I chose to write an article for the first time since my journalism uni days, to give it a bash again.

But I will definately get someone to proof-read. It was my first article for a while, and written late on a Sunday evening. Cheers for the other positive comments though.
