Wray’s Weekly Wrap: What The… Draw?

By Andrew Wray on Mon, 04/04.2011

In what was a very eventful week is sports, we saw a lot of action happen. New kings of cricket were crowned and the AFL had another draw, the first time in over a hundred years that there have been 2 draws in the opening rounds.

AFL

St Kilda 13.17.95 drew Richmond 14.11.95
This match was an incredible match to watch with the Tigers losing Jack Riewoldt early in the game due to concussion and the last half of the game being an exciting one to watch. Unfortunately neither side could cross the line.

North Melbourne 7.14.56 def. by Collingwood 21.17.143
Not much to write about this game. Collingwood's two elite on-ballers Swan and Pendlebury got 40 and 37 disposals respectively; North will want to move on while Collingwood will want to continue their form.

Port Adelaide 15.8.98 def. by West Coast 16.20.116
Very poor game skills wise. Port Adelaide have now lost Cassisi for 6 weeks due to injury. It was a reasonably close game up until later in the fourth quarter.

Gold Coast 7.10.52 def. by Carlton 26.15.171
Gold Coast made there debut and it was a let down. Carlton dominated from the opening bounce and showed the vulnerability of Gold Coast's short defence. The game was pretty much over by the end of the first quarter.

Fremantle 10.18.78 def. by Geelong 13.11.89
This was, in my opinion, match of the round but was taken out of the limelight due to the Gold Coast debuting. It was one of the most exciting games and the game could have been won by any side as it was only decided in the final minutes by a Matthew stokes goal to seal the game.

Western Bulldogs 19.9.123 def. Brisbane Lions 6.9.45
Dogs dominated, Brisbane struggled without on field leaders such as Jonathon Brown. It was a great game for Dream Teamers and Doggies fans. Other then that, it was not much to the game as it was a slaughter by the Dogs.

Sydney 14.14.98 def. Essendon 13.15.93
Essendon were winning the whole game and Hird’s boys were looking the goods until the final minutes. The Swans were able to steal the win, showing that Essendon still have a long way to go.

Hawthorn 16.26.122 def. Melbourne 12.5.77
Hawthorn starting slow allowed the Dees to get into the game, but midway through the game the Hawks were having none of it, creating a massive win and giving Melbourne no chance.

English Premier League

West Ham United 2 – 4 Manchester United
Manchester United won in an absolute thriller, coming back from 2-0 at half time with Wayne Rooney scoring a well earned hat trick and Javier Hernandez scoring the final goal to put it beyond doubt.

Birmingham City 2 – 1 Bolton Wanderers
Alex McLeish’s men gave themselves a nice 2 point buffer from the relegation zone while Bolton copped a knock to there Europa league chances.

Everton 2 – 2 Aston Villa
The fierce rivals battled it out in a well earned draw but both sides should be happy with the result.
Newcastle United 4 – 1 Wolverhampton
Newcastle pulled a big win, helping them secure their place in the Premier League despite the owner and manager saying they will push for Europe. Wolves lurk dangerously in the relegation zone.

Stoke City 1 – 1 Chelsea
Stoke City made a shock surprise coming close to beating Chelsea. Stoke scored the opening goal 8 minutes in with Jonathon Walters putting it into the back of the net, however Stoke’s luck ran out with Didier Drogba putting one behind the net later in the first half. Stoke unlucky did not make more of their chances in the second half. Torres still remains goalless in a Chelsea shirt.

WBA 2 – 1 Liverpool
Roy got his ultimate revenge. As his team fought for relegation, he beat the team that sacked him a few months ago. With a bit of assistance from the referee, West Brom netted two penalties. Roy’s boys now sit 4 points clear of relegation.

Wigan 0 – 0 Tottenham
A draw helps Wigan get a valuable point while Tottenham’s champions league qualification chances are in the balance.

Arsenal 0 – 0 Blackburn
This is a massive blow to Arsenal's title chances, almost gifting it to Manchester United. Blackburn sit 2 points clear of relegation.

Fulham 3 – 0 Blackpool
Fulham got a massive win over the minnows of the Premier League. Blackpool find themselves in 17th spot, 1 point clear of relegation while Fulham sit comfortably mid-table.

Manchester City 5 – 0 Sunderland
Manchester City demolished the traveling side from the stadium of light, helping Manchester City reach third position while Sunderland find themselves falling away from the Europe spots

Cricket

India have won the ICC World cup in the final over Sri Lanka, showing why they are the best team in the world in classy fashion as always. Can they retain there title in 4 years time?

Wrestling

Is it a sport? Yeah, let’s not get into that debate right now but I know for a lot of sports fans, Wrestlemania is marked on the calendar, even if they know longer watch it. I myself was keen on seeing The Rock return to the WWE, especially on the biggest stage of 'em all. No titles changed hands at Wrestlemania and yes, the Undertaker kept his streak, 19-0.

Formula 1

This weekend will see the Formula 1 go to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Check it out if you’re interested on OneHD and my tip will be Vettel to win, Webber to come second for a Red Bull First Row finish.

Premier League Darts

Darts is heating up with Phil “The Power” Taylor dominating the scene demolishing Raymond Van Barneveld. The Australian Simon “The Wizard of Oz” Whitlock finds himself just outside the playoff spot, sitting in fifth place, missing out by 1 point. Can he take fourth spot next week?
