LeBron’s Announcement
By Daniel Eade on Wed, 07/07.2010Maybe it will play out like “Idol†or “Survivorâ€, potential suitors eliminated every 10 minutes. What we do know is that on Thursday night (Friday morning in Australia) LeBron James will announce who he will play for next season and beyond.
James, arguably the greatest player on the planet, will appear in an hour long special on ESPN to end the waiting and let the world know his intentions for the future.
While money raised through advertising will go to charity, a very honourable move from James, the unnecessary decision to continue to build up the hype through a “LeBron Special Announcement†appears to have spiralled completely out of control.
Instead of a simple press conference, James is milking his final moments of free-agency for everything it is worth, and in the process will set himself up in front of the cameras as if fans are watching a $100million lottery prize go off.
As teams hold their breath, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks and Miami Heat all believing they have an honest chance of securing James, the King will slowly break the hearts of fan-bases across the USA and the world with a drawn out announcement.
How is this going to play out? Will it start with James eliminating teams through the hour, giving his reasons why he didn’t select that franchise and speaking highly of every team and their attempt to win him over.
Will we get down to a final two, with the host announcing that we’ll get the answer right after another commercial break? Will Ryan Seacrest be their to gets fans to text in where they believe he should play?
Will we have a judging panel? Each weighing in on where they believe James should play. Which might be fantastic if we had a panel consisting of Ron Artest, Michael Jordan and Bill Simmons.
What happens if LeBron’s decision is leaked before the show? Would ESPN run with the story or would they hold off until the show is done?
It really appears to be just a bit too much, and although the show may be very interesting, it does seem to be quite unnecessary and a bit over the top.
Because which ever team LeBron chooses it will take him one second to say the name. How can you turn one second into one hour?

Very well said. I can't
Very well said. I can't understand why LeBron would do this either. I hope he stays with Cleveland.
I actually don't mind that
I actually don't mind that he's announcing his decision on ESPN, but I think the whole thing of it being a one hour telecast, with all proceeds going to that charity is a bit much. What he and ESPN should have done is worked it into a SportsCenter telecast instead of this over-the-top exclusive to ESPN broadcast.
On where he is going, it seems the Miami Heat are the front-runners according to 'multiple sources' at ESPN and a trio of Wade/James/Bosh is deadly. But I think for a couple of reasons it still won't be enough for the Heat to win.
1] Even IF LBJ signs with the Heat, they'll only have five roster sports taken. Plus, they'll be over the salary cap which is set at $58M so they'll need to trade Michael Beasley, most likely to the Toronto Raptors in a sign and trade deal for Chris Bosh.
2] They still won't be the strongest team in the East. Yep that's right. All this will pretty much mean is out goes the Cleveland Cavs as a contender in the East, and in comes the Miami Heat. There's still the Orlando Magic, and the Heat won't have anyone to stop Dwight Howard and the Boston Celtics are giving it one more crack as we've seen by them re-signing Paul Pierce for another four years and Ray Allen for another two.
3] Finally, it doesn't make sense to LeBron James off-court. By going to the NY Knicks or NJ Nets he could be potentially worth $1B, joining Tiger Woods as the second sports billionaire ever (third if you believe the stories that Michael Schumacher is a billionaire as well). At the Heat, not only won't he be close to being worth this figure, will it even be his team? In all likelihood, it'll be the team of Dwayne Wade.
The next few hours before the final decision will be huge. I'm hoping James doesn't go to Miami, but the evidence is pointing that way.
