Michael Clarke Must Be Dumped As Captain Now!

By David Genford on Thu, 24/11.2011

Rules aren’t necessarily made to be broken, but loopholes are there to be discovered. I believe that I have a loophole that will convince you that Michael Clarke should definitely not be the captain of the Australian cricket team. Let me set a scenario for you;

It’s the Ashes, the first three tests have seen one win to England, one win to Australia and one has been drawn. It’s the fourth test and we have set England a target of 300 on the last day. The only problem is that they are scoring runs easily and are not losing any wickets. The best way to keep the Ashes series alive is to bowl the overs slowly and to bowl a negative line. The tactic is successful and the match ends in a draw.

Under the current set up there is bad news for Australia; Michael Clarke has been suspended for the fifth and series deciding test due to slow over rates. Are you kidding me? Every match we currently risk having our best batsmen suspended! Is there a solution to this problem?

To me it is quite simple, you make the worst player on your team the captain, but in reality they are only the captain on the team sheet. What does a captain do anyway?

1 – Toss the coin – Clarke tells the captain if he wants them to bat or bowl, in fact if Clarke is a complete control freak, he can tell them to call heads or tails!

2 – Choose who bowls – Clarke could still perform this task from his fielding position.

3 – Be in control of the DRS – Not difficult for Clarke to signal to the captain to ask for the replay.

4 – Argue with the umpire – Don’t argue with the umpire or tell the new captain what they should be questioning.

5 – Choose the batting order – Easily performed by Clarke in the dressing room

6 – Handle the media – Would it be that disappointing if Clarke wasn’t giving the press conferences

The major factor working against this is the players’ need to want to say they were captain, or the need to get a channel nine commentary gig through the automatic process of being an Australian captain. If the players could overcome this fact, the best thing for Australian cricket would be to have the worst player in the team named captain. Wouldn’t it be handy to have Clarke available for the final Ashes test in the scenario above? It’s outside the square but there is no need to maintain the status quo just because it has always been done this way.
