Pakistan made hard work of it before snapping Australia's record 13-Test winning streak against them in a thrilling three-wicket victory at Headingley.
Needing just 40 runs with seven wickets in hand to complete the win on day four, Pakistan lost four wickets before Umar Gul (1no) hit Mitchell Johnson through covers for the winning runs.
Gul leapt in the air in celebration and the local Pakistani population rejoiced in the stands with Mohammad Aamer (5no) the other unbeaten batsman.
Australia had their chances to press for another great escape with Shane Watson dropping Imran Farhat (67) on four and Michael Clarke grassing Shoaib Malik (10) when he was also on four.
It was Pakistan's first Test win over Australia since November 1995 in Sydney and levelled the two-match series at 1-1.
But there were signs of the wheels coming off as Pakistan lost 5-24 in 77 balls.
"Honestly it was a bit nerve wracking ... thank god that it turned out positive for us,'' said new Pakistan captain Salman Butt.
