2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final preview
By Alan Nicolea on Wed, 30/06.2010The quarter-final stage of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is finally upon us, as European heavyweights Holland and Germany clash against South American powerhouses Brazil and Argentina respectively. On the other side of the draw, either Uruguay or Ghana will continue their fairytale ride to the semi-finals while Spain will look to continue shedding their 'chokers' tag against Paraguay.
NETHERLANDS V BRAZIL
Why Holland will win – Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben has added so much to the Netherlands since returning from injury against Cameroon. His speed on the flanks coupled with that thunderous left boot of his spells danger to Brazil's defence. With midfield maestro Wesley Sneijder now beginning to dictate proceedings more comfortably, expect the Dutch to finally hit top form when it counts.

Why Brazil will win – Because for all their apparent domination so far in South Africa, a loss here will not go down well back in Brazil, and the players will be keen to avoid the backlash which occurred in Germany 2006, after they fell meekly to France. Led by a defensive back four that is proving more difficult to get past than the Great Wall of China, Brazil have the means to hurt Holland on the counter-attack. With Kaka, Luis Fabiano and Robinho starting to find form, an early goal from the Selecao will almost prove fatal to the Netherlands hopes of progressing to the semi-finals.
Tip – Brazil
URUGUAY V GHANA
Why Uruguay will win – With all due respect to Ghana, Uruguay have an enormous opportunity to make the semi-finals of a World Cup and will be hellbent on making the most of a favourable draw in the knock-out stages. Forwards Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez will prove very difficult to contain for the African surprise packets as Korea Republic can attest to. The South Americans need to stay offensive throughout the contest, and if they do, a place in the last four for the two time world champions will be a formality.

Why Ghana will win – Ghana now find themselves in a position to create footballing history as they attempt to become the first African nation to make the last four of a World Cup. With a parochial continent urging them on, expect Ghana to come out all guns blazing against a Uruguay side who have been known to sit back defensively. Star players Asamoah Gyan and Kevin Boateng are playing brilliant football and will cause Uruguay plenty of worries if given room to move.
Tip – Uruguay
