2011/2012 A-League Preview: Melbourne Heart

Well, this is awkward. You’ll notice that there is no position next to the Heart in the title. They were originally marked down to finish 4th when I finalised my ladder and started posting these season previews about 10 days ago.

Then over the weekend came the news that Colosimo was livid at being stripped of the captaincy for Fred and was in deep negotiations with the Victory. Yesterday – as per the former Wellington Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata on Twitter – came the news that Colosimo had signed for the Victory and would take the field against Sydney FC on Saturday.

It’s not official yet, but going by reports it would take a backflip of monumental proportions for Colosimo to stay with the Heart. So this isn’t a season preview as much as what it says about the Heart to let this happen.

Last season the Heart started building a solid brand for a foundation club. They were engaging the community and generally just presenting themselves as something different to the Victory who was the big dog in town. The base was there to work and expand from.

Then, it seems – much like everyone else – they were taken aback by the off-season signings by most clubs; especially the Victory. Here was where the Heart made a monumental failure of a decision, but first a slight detour.

Having attended a number of Heart games in their first season and also knowing a handful first-hand, the general statement would be that they have a slight inferiority complex when it comes to the A-League. That’s not a knock on the supporter base, it’s only natural that would be the case – after all when you’re spending your time supporting a team that is dwarfed by the cross-town rival it’s almost impossible not to develop a complex.

While it’s fine for the supporters to think like that (it’s probably what makes the derbies what they are), under no circumstances should anyone in the front office think like that, and it’s almost like they’ve allowed the mentality of the supporters to seep through into their own thinking...

“Look at what the Victory has done. How are we going to get some headlines?”
“How about we make Fred captain? He used to be a Victory player so that should sting them.”
“That’s a genius thought! Quick, someone tell Simon he’s not captain anymore!”

The problem is that when a new captain left the club four seasons ago, no-one except the most petty Victory supporter would be taken aback by the new captain – and considering the reaction of some Victory supporters to Colosimo’s potential signings, petty Victory fans are another story for another time.

So after hearing this news, Colosimo is rightfully livid. Looking at their squad, he is the clear, stand-alone choice for a captain and it shouldn’t even be close. Even in a weird, hypothetical world where he’s somehow not regarded as the captain, the next choice should be Matt Thompson and then after that it should be Bolton. Basically when you look at the available choices, it all looks like it’s been done to stick it up the Victory.

Now you have a captain that shouldn’t be one – and doesn’t deserve to be – at what seems to be the cost of driving away the man who would have been a lynchpin in the centre of defence. In summation;

Total gained from making Fred captain? Nothing.
Total lost from making Fred captain? Losing the rightful leader of the squad, putting the club in damage control, portraying the club as the inferior little brother at 10 years old trying to get attention anyway possible, and strengthening their cross-town rivals to the point where any weaknesses they had in their playing stocks are just about gone.

Don't forget he was dropped last season, and his negative back- and sideways passing, and then aimless long balls were a major reason why Heart did not make the finals. He is not worth half the rumoured $240,000 he is on. What a dummy-spitter. Good luck Simon, hope you find what you're looking for, but please leave Heart asap.

That's another point though, the decision wasn't made with that in mind. If it was, then it would have been done at the conclusion of last season, not two weeks out from the new season and weeks after Fred had arrived in Melbourne.
