With the departure of Byun and retention of Jamieson, Lavicka seems to have decided on his first choice left back, which was a source of consternation for much of last season. The defensive stocks as a whole look very solid with the acquisition of Bosschaart and Beauchamp as – assumingly – the first choice centre backs.
The way Sydney’s squad has been compiled, it seems like a 4-2-3-1 is their best formation. That would mean McFlynn and Moriyasu as the defensive midfielders. That is an area of worry, purely because the three midfielders ahead of them (Kisel, Emerton and Carle) should be deployed in a more attacking sense whenever possible to feed the target man (Bruno).
It leaves both McFlynn and Moriyasu having to deal with – in theory – a lot of extra space in front of them. While they’re both perfectly competent players, it’s the quality of the attacking players they’ll be facing from the teams I have above them on the ladder that might show them up. In a battle between those two defensive midfielders and the likes of Broich, Kewell, Fred, Vidosic and co., I’d take the attacking side almost every single time.
Last season Lavicka struggled to adapt to the new players that had come into the side following their title win against the Victory. With the loss of Keller, Byun, Musialik and Jurman, there might be a similar period of adjustment. Despite my earlier proclamations of what will suit Sydney this season, obviously it’s not always that simple.
It doesn’t help that the first month of the season will also double as a telling indicator to where Sydney will be at for the season. With the Victory, Brisbane, Adelaide and Heart to start off, it’s a horror draw. If they don’t hit the ground running, they’ll be playing catch-up for the rest of the season. Considering those clubs just happen to make up my top four, it’s not hard to tell how I think they’ll start.
Best Case Scenario: Lavicka finds the perfect formation straight away and after Kewell tears his hamstring in Round 1 after the Victory have made all their substitutions, Sydney go on to win their first four and snare an Asian Champions League spot.
Worst Case Scenario: Sydney’s front office gets itchy feet after three points in their first four matches and fires Lavicka. His spot is replaced by Terry Butcher, who releases Emerton to Sydney Olympic and promotes Jamie Coyne to fill Emerton’s position.
