Aussies Abroad Report Card

By Ben Somerford on Thu, 28/04.2011

For many of our Socceroos plying their trade in Europe their club seasons are coming to a close so now's the time to analyse how their individual campaigns have gone in a comprehensive report card.

Of course, with Australia expected to play a few friendlies in June (one has been announced against New Zealand while another against Serbia is likely) it's always good to note how our Socceroos our performing and what form they're in at club level.

Now firstly, I should point out it's been three months since my last report card, so the ratings here will be focused on the past three months (essentially since the Asian Cup).

Finally, as most of the Asian leagues have only just begun, I've left them out but most of our Europe-based Aussies are mentioned here and don't forget to flick over to page 2 and beyond as this report card is quite comprehensive.

English Premier League

Tim Cahill – Everton – C+

Cahill has had a tough time since he aggravated a knee injury during the 2011 Asian Cup. He hasn't scored for the Toffees since and has only managed sporadic appearances.

Mark Schwarzer – Fulham – A

Australia's number one goes from strength to strength at Fulham, walking straight back into the side after the Asian Cup despite David Stockdale's impressive performances. Schwarzer made a bit of a blunder against Manchester United but other than that he's been typically assured.

Brett Emerton – Blackburn – B-

Emerton produced some decent early-season form but has dropped away in recent times as Blackburn have struggled for form in the Premiership. Has been good enough to hold his spot in the side.

Vince Grella – Blackburn – Fail

Grella has had another season to forget due to injuries. Grella underwent an Achilles operation in March and has been ruled out for the campaign after just seven appearances this term.

David Carney – Blackpool – C+

Carney had a good run in the Tangerines' side after impressing his club boss Ian Holloway with his performances in the Asian Cup. But after a trio of consecutive starts in February, Carney has only made one more appearance before having his season ended early due to a shoulder injury.

Chris Herd – Aston Villa – B

It's been a breakthrough season for 21-year-old Herd. In the past three months, Herd hasn't been in the Villa matchday squad as often as early in the season as they've battled for survival but he has made two starts which show how he's regarded.

Italian Serie A

Mark Bresciano – Lazio – B+

After his off-season move from Palermo to Rome, Bresciano initially struggled for regular game-time but in recent times has found his feet in midfield for Champions League hopefuls Lazio. He's been playing in a deep-lying midfield role and has been important, starting their past four games.

Italian Serie B

Carl Valeri – Sassuolo – A-

Valeri has proved his worth to struggling second tier Sassuolo this term as when he's played they've generally got a positive result. Valeri plays an important role in midfield for Sassuolo but they are not yet safe from the drop.

Adrian Madaschi – Portogruaro – C

Fringe Socceroo Madaschi has had a difficult campaign with Portogruaro in Serie B. Madaschi has basically been Portogruaro's first-choice central defender but the team are struggling to avoid the drop. Dealing with pacy opponents has been tricky, along with the more skilful Serie B players.

German Bundesliga

Mitch Langerak – Borussia Dortmund – B+

There's not much more we could expect from 22-year-old goalkeeper Langerak in his debut season in Germany. He may have only made one first-team appearance, but it was an impressive performance in a 3-1 win at German giants Bayern Munich. His positive and hard-working attitude has helped him make a good impression at German champions-elect Dortmund.

German 2.Bundesliga

Nikita Rukavytsya – Hertha BSC – A

Rukavytsya's career may have been at the crossroads after his release by Dutch champions FC Twente last European summer but his switch to Hertha Berlin has proven a master stroke as he's been a regular for a club just promoted back to Germany's Bundesliga. Rukavytsya has also provided the second-most assists in 2.Bundesliga, with 12 as he's excelled in a new wide role. His set-piece deliveries has been good too.

Dario Vidosic – Arminia Bielefeld – C

Vidosic made a crucial loan switch to Arminia in January from Bundesliga club Nurnberg, where he is out of contract at the end of this season. But Vidosic hasn't set the world on fire at relegated Arminia. Vidosic has regularly started for Arminia in attack, but hasn't scored for a side desperately in need of a spark.

Dutch Eredivisie

Brett Holman – AZ Alkmaar – B+

Australia's 2010 World Cup relevation hasn't really found the consistency as anticipated at AZ this term, but he's still been good. A commanding recent performance against Den Haag was a highlight. Holman has been energetic and busy for AZ, but the final product hasn't always been there this term.

Tommy Oar – FC Utrecht – B-

It's easy to forget Oar is still a teenager and with that in mind he's done well at Utrecht this term. He has been given opportunities by Utrecht boss Ton du Chatinier against big clubs such as Liverpool, Celtic, PSV Eindhoven, FC Twente and Feyenoord as a learning experience. Recently he's made a few starts and done okay in a wide-attacking role.

Adam Sarota – FC Utrecht – B-

Sarota has been a regular in Utrecht matchday squads all season, making a few starts along with a handful of appearances off the bench. Sarota is seen as back-up to Nana Asare in Utrecht's midfield. Has struggled for first-team opportunities in the past few months after a bright start to the season.

Michael Zullo – FC Utrecht – B

Zullo had a nightmare start to life at Utrecht due to a combination of groin and abdominal injuries which kept him out until February, before making his first-team debut away to NEC Nijmegen. More recently he's made a trio of appearances at left and right back, with his performance against Vitesse receiving praise.

Eerste Divisie

James Holland – Sparta Rotterdam – B-

Holland made the move he had to make to Sparta in January after completely being frozen out at parent club AZ Alkmaar. Holland is a thorough professional off the pitch and just needs regular game-time at a high standard to back that up. He's done okay at Sparta with a few goals too.

Turkish Super Lig

Harry Kewell – Galatasaray - C

Despite a fine Asian Cup, Kewell's second-half to the Turkish season has been one to forget as he nears the end of his current contract at Galatasaray, who are struggling way down in midtable. Injuries and illness have seen Kewell in and out of the Cimbom side, as he's only managed one goal since the turn of the year.

Lucas Neill – Galatasaray - B

Galatasaray may have had a season to forget, but all reports from Istanbul suggest Neill has been one of the few shining lights for the club. Neill has been a regular in central defence for Cimbom but is expected to leave the club at the end of the season, with a March visit to the UK hinting at a switch back to England.

Mile Jedinak – Genclerbirligi - A-

Jedinak hit a rich vein of goalscoring form for the Socceroos at the Asian Cup and re-discovered that touch in April for Genclerbirligi with three goals in three Super Lig games. He's a threat with his head, while his free-kick against Besiktas was something special. Still I'm informed he's not convinced everyone in Ankara with his whole game.

James Troisi – Kayserispor – B

After a five-month stint on the sidelines with injury Troisi made his return in February, and has gradually fought his way into the side on a regular basis making a number of consecutive appearances in April.

You missed Alex Cisak in

You missed Alex Cisak in League 2 at Accrington Stanley. has had 10 clean sheets in past 18 games. Was league 2 player of the month in March and has helped Stanley into the playoffs. Will provide tough competition for Langerak and Coe for the 3rd pot at the 2014 world cup A+
