United To Beat Liverpool In This Weekend's Big Clash

Liverpool v Manchester United – Away Win @ 7/5 ($2.4)

One of the very hardest of matches to predict as these two ‘giants’ of the game have never really established an advantage for one over the other on a ‘head to head’ basis. Nor does it follow that home advantage is the usually the key to the outcome, as United have travelled to Anfield and beaten them five times in their last ten league visits. Liverpool however has won their last three home matches against the ‘Red Devils’, which included the 3-1 victory back in March when Dirk Kuyt bagged a hat trick. Interestingly there has only been one draw in the league in the last ten fixtures at Anfield between these two teams.

Form doesn’t always play a big factor in the outcomes either; these two teams are the most successful in England which makes the fixture almost a battle to be the best team in the country. It is a game that both team’s hate losing and is often a game that can be decisive when it comes to league titles.

Both Sir Alex Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish will know that a United victory will put them 9 points clear of Liverpool in the league, thus giving the Reds a huge mountain to climb if they are to win the league. Of course a Liverpool win would put them straight back in the race, but to defeat a Manchester United side when the momentum is firmly in their favour is a big ask, even for Liverpool at Anfield.

This is why the neck is sticking out this week as the belief that United’s momentum will carry them to a hard earned but decisive victory, probably by just the odd goal.

West Brom v Wolves – Draw @ 5/2 ($3.5)

What better than to concentrate the mind on a vital local derby between two sides who remain amongst the favourites to be relegated at the end of the season. Roy Hodgson’s Albion have made a sluggish start to the season, with just one win thus far, but have at least stopped the rot temporarily with draws in their last two games. Wolves on the other hand were amongst the table toppers after three games, but are now on a run of four defeats in four league games meaning that a draw in this match would be a reprieve of sorts.

On paper at least the teams are very evenly matched, however the glaring statistic that will hurt Baggies fans is that their team has yet to win at home this season. Wolves meanwhile have played well on their travels, losing just one from three and that came in a very close match a couple of weeks ago at Anfield against Liverpool.

There is every reason therefore why Mick McCarthy will expect his Wolves team to come away from the Hawthorns with at least a point and whilst that outcome might disappoint Hodgson, he will at least have his side on a three match unbeaten run.

This fixture ended in a 1-1 draw last season and punters should expect a very similar outcome this term.

Brighton v Hull – Draw @ 5/2 ($3.5)

After a brilliant start to the season, it would appear that the ‘wheels are coming off’ for the Seagulls with four defeats and a draw in their last five fixtures in all competitions. The dip in form started with a defeat at Leicester a month ago, which was followed a few days later with a defeat in the League Cup against Liverpool. A draw followed at home against Leeds, but most worrying for Gus Poyet and his team are the two defeats in their last two league fixtures, particularly the home loss against Crystal Palace. They will be all out to stop any further damage in this match.

Nigel Pearson’s Hull meanwhile are on an unbeaten league run of six games which has brought them into the promotion race and they are now level on points with Brighton. Not a free scoring team; Hull however are a very resilient outfit and highly committed to the ‘Pearson cause’ who will relish an early season promotion ‘punch up’.

The game has all the hallmarks of a typical Championship encounter, with one team trying to get their act back together with the other not allowing them to do so with any comfort. It is why a draw is the favoured option; moreover it is likely to be a goalless one!
