Berlusconis' Weapons of Mass Destruction- AC Milan's Top 10 of the past 25 years!

By Blerton Belica on Sun, 05/09.2010

With the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho in the summer transfer window, AC Milan again has a team we all should show some respect. The "Rosso Nerri" fans are very optimistic in winning this year Seria A title.

The Italian trophy has not been in San Siro since 2004 and that is why the current italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, is a very hungry man.
However, the two "superstar" arrivals in Milan this year not only made me watch Italian football again, but it also made me dig deeper in this great clubs history and see which players Berlusconi has turned for help and reinforced his starting lineup.

Silvio Berlusconi has been number one man in Milan since 1986, and since then the red and black brigade has won 7 Seria A titles, one Italian Cup, 5 Italian Super Cups, 5 Champions League titles, 5 European Super Cups, 2 Intercontinental cups and 1 FIFA World Club Championship Trophioes - total of 26 trophies. In the 24 years of his reign and running, the red and black shirt has been worn by a great number of players. Its very difficult to rank them, but Ive managed to highlight at least 10 which has made this club what it is today.

1. Marco Van Basten
After 133 games and 128 goals for Ajax Amsterdam, Van Basten signed for AC Milan in 1987 and became one of the first "superstar" transfers for Berlusconi. In 4 years, he was scoring goals from every angle possible, winning 12 trophies with the club and eventualy became one of the best goalscorers in the history of the club. The supporters are still arguing even today,  what couldve happened if the Dutch striker was not forced out of the game due to injuries. He hardly played the last 2 years of his contract and his last game for the club was the 1993 Champions League final against Marseile, which AC Milan lost 1:0. He played 147 games in total for the club and scored 90 goals.  He was selected as European Player of the Year award in 1988, 1989 and 1992 and in 1992 FIFA finaly selected him as World Player of the year.

2. Ruud Gullit
With a total transfer of what today is 7 milion euro, Gullit was one of the most expensive players of the 90's. After playing for Harlem and Feyenoord, the Dutch playmaker became the number one man in PSV Eindhoven. He has 2 great seasons playing in the Phillips Arena for the club and in 1987 together with Van Basten he signed for AC Milan. Together with his friend, he won 12 trophies from 1987 - 1993. Gullit played in all midfield roles, earning a total of 171 games and 56 goals for the club. Later, he was loaned then sold to Sampdoria, before moving to Chelsea where in 1998 he retired.

3. Roberto Baggio
The legendary itlaian striker, is 1 of 7 players who have played for all 3 top italian clubs: Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan. To be fair to the supporters, he did not leave a big impression in San Siro, playing only 51 games and scoring 12 goals in his 2 years for the club. He then moved to Bologna and then to the blue side of Milan, Inter Milan. He found the net a lot more playing for lower clubs like Bologna and Brescia.

4. Andrey Shevchenko
If he didnt leave for Chelsea in 2006 to play for Jose Mourinho, today Shevchenko would've been AC Milan's all time top goalscorer. He finished 46 goals shy of the goalscoring record, held by Gunnar Nordal - total 221 goals. Shevchenko played 322 games for the club and scored 175 goals. He eventualy returned to AC Milan in 2008 on loan, but then went back to Ukraine where he would defenitly retire when his time is up.
I would say Shevchenko is one the best players Berlusconi ahs brought to the club, but i have put him in number 4 because in his 7 years with AC Milan he won only 1 Italuan title and 1 Champions League trophie.

5. Dejan Savicevic
Savicevic is probably the only player that has earned his transfer to AC Milan because of his success with Red Star Belgrade in 1991, which also won him runner up for the Golden Boot award that year. He lost to Jean-Pierre Papin, who became his team mate w years later.
In his first year for Milan, the Montenegran played only a handful of games. But, after the departure of Gullit and retiring of Van Basten, Savicevic became clubs favourite. He would always be remembered for single-handedly beating FC Barcelona in the 1994 Champions League final in Athens, where AC Milan won 4-0 even though FC Barcelona were favourites.

At the end you say "Even

At the end you say "Even though they all played a big role in the clubs history, the 10 players in the list were Berlosconi's secret weapon for success," after you mention players who missed you list.
Yet you in Ibra, Lentini, Pato, Ronaldinho in the list. Neither of them have been involved in any cup winning teams for Milan. Indeed Ibra hasent even been at milan for 30 days. How can he be a success for ac milan?
These 2 points completely contradict each other.
Yet you happily ignore PAOLO MALDINI! One of the greatest milan players ever. You obviously dont know about milan, obviously dont know about the players. E.g. Pato was bought BEFORE ronaldinho yet under ronnie you say: "After some complaints from supporters that Ronaldinho isn't playing attractive football, Berlusconi brought some of his old friends to help out: Ibrahimovic, Robinho and PATO."
