A Bout In Manchester Worth Watching
By Amos Rojter on Mon, 24/10.2011An intriguing battle was fought this weekend, the results of which provided a statement no one expected. This heavyweight fight was in Manchester. In the blue corner was Manchester City, and in the red corner was the reigning Title holder, Manchester United. These two bitter rivals now together compose one of the biggest match-ups in the English Premier League, extending far beyond their existing local derby rivalry. Manchester United’s “noisy neighbours” can now match it with United, and the game proved a mouth-watering prospect.
Manchester United started the game off strongly, masking any hint of how the plot of the match would progress. They were unable to convert, and it wasn’t long before Mario Balotelli produced a cracker (pardon the pun), putting City 1-0 up.
Things soon got worse for United, as Jonny Evans was sent off, reducing the Red Devils to Ten Men, and tellingly one short in defence against the might of Dzeko, Silva and Balotelli.
City capitalised on this, soon going 3-0 up as United began looking a shadow of the club we know them to be. A goal from Fletcher made it 3-1, and got people wondering if there could be a fight back on offer, but City soon comprehensively shut that door.
Alarmingly, Manchester United continued to focus on attacking, rather than defending, even at 1-4 down, and City were easily able to counter, and pick holes in the United defence (made easier with Jonny Evans absence). It was indeed a very un-Manchester United-like performance, and put City five points clear at the top of the table.
There will now be questions as to whether anyone can catch Manchester City this season. There is no doubt they have improved out of sight, and Balotelli, Dzeko and Silva all pose serious threats up front, as much as Toure, Clichy and Kompany have the defence covered. They are looking a more coherent team than we have seen in previous seasons, and this is something to worry about.
It isn’t over for Manchester United just yet. They simply had a dirty game, which wasn’t helped by the red card. A bad game against their arch-rivals though is magnified ten-fold in the eyes of each club’s supporters, and it makes the return fixture shape up as the game of the season.
United will learn more from this loss than City will from the win, and this may result in some transfer activity in January. There is now a five point gap, and tellingly, a huge goal difference separating both Lancashire clubs, and United will know they need to bridge this gap, particularly the goal difference, if they are to win title number twenty.
It is an exciting season ahead, and it is shaping to be a big battle between the two Manchester clubs, can United come back from City’s knockout blow? Can a third or fourth club join the title race? Or is it all over already? Have your say below!
