Dilemmas On Durakovic

In my season preview for the Victory, I mentioned that the one x-factor was how Durakovic coped with the tools at his disposal. Obviously so far he has struggled, but it’s not a new thing. To understand why we need to take a quick step back to the Asian Champions League and their group match against Gamba Osaka at Etihad Stadium, where the first inklings that he may not be an intuitive manager surfaced.
Needing a win to stay alive, Leijer gave Victory an early lead before Osaka equalised on the stroke of half time. In the second half, with Osaka having the upper hand in terms of possession and general play, Durakovic did absolutely nothing until the 90th minute. In a must win game he let it drift along aimlessly until making one token substitution when it was too late to matter.
Understandably this seems to have been wiped from the memory bank, and given there were about four people and a dog there it’s fair enough. But it was the first instance that showed there might be a flaw in his coaching makeup.
He is eerily comparable to current Sydney coach Vitezslav Lavicka with their methods. Lavicka’s failure to adapt has almost become overblown but it’s only fitting that they both showed an inability to adapt on the same weekend, as the excellent Pass and Move blog breaks down here. To be fair it’s hardly something to criticise Lavicka for too much, but it adds some depth to the point about Durakovic and his failings against Adelaide just 24 hours prior.
After Leijer’s 55th minute sending off for a second yellow card – the less said about the initial yellow the better for everyone’s sanity – it was clear as day what had to be done. Keep pace up front to hit Adelaide on the counter, shuffle Foschini over to partner Vargas and then slide Broxham out to right back. The majority of us aren’t tactical experts along the lines of the aforementioned Pass and Move blog – or Craig Foster in his wet dreams when Barcelona are playing – but some things are just too obvious to ignore.
So after leaving Broxham alongside Vargas – leading to the comical sight of Van Dijk matched up against him, Rojas and Thompson were the two attacking players to be taken off for Cernak and Solorzano. So instead of a dynamic front four, Victory were left with two players in Kewell and Hernandez that weren’t fit enough to play the whole 90.
The easy response is that if the late shot by Hernandez had dipped just a little bit more the moves would have been hailed as a masterstroke, but it shouldn’t take away from the previous half hour where Adelaide were extremely unlucky not to find themselves ahead by two, three or even four goals such were the chances they had. Melbourne’s lack of an attacking threat during that time allowed Adelaide to heap the pressure on.
With the season just two weeks old it would be foolish to jump the gun and sensationalise the teething problems, but there are some issues to work on. It may be just a coincidence that the moves Durakovic has made so far in-game have been the wrong ones, but the key is to learn from them. After all, a mistake isn’t a mistake unless it happens twice.
Firstly, Kewell should not be leading the line ever again. His optimum position is either in behind the striker or wide left. Rojas and Cernak should have a mortgage on the right wing, rotating as Durakovic sees fit. Then, assuming Allsopp isn’t headed off to Wellington in the coming days, either he, Solorzano – or even Thompson if Durakovic wants to start Cernak on the left – should be the man at the tip.
With rumours flying around everywhere that players are being allowed to speak to other clubs, it’s hard to get a concrete read on just what is planned. But considering the attacking riches at Victory’s disposal, it’s hard to plead for patience. Considering the way the new board has acted with some of their decisions, it’s hard to say that they’ll be patient. And almost most importantly, given the opponent for the Victory this week, the supporters definitely won’t be patient.

The only thing you missed was constant references by merrick haters to the long ball he supposedly favoured. Merrick is no longer there and unless I'm mistaken a large percentage of balls played to Kewell were of the longish variety.
