Barcelona are the best team in the world. There is no doubt about that. They had a wonderful year in which they won five trophies. But this year, at times, they have looked vulnerable too. In my opinion Barcelona still need buy some players. Their defence looks weak with Abidal and Puyol both entering the twilights of their respective careers. Here are some players who Barcelona should eye in the January transfer window.
A. Center Back: As a back-up for Pique and Puyol
1. Mats Hummels
Team: Borussia Dortmund
Age: 23
Price Tag: Around 15 million pounds
Hummels is currently one of the best defenders in Bundesliga. The 23 year old is a talented and committed youngster and was the backbone of the Borussia Dortmund team that won the Bundesliga last year. The German international could be a good replacement for the ageing Puyol and could form a great defensive partnership with Pique.
2. Thiago Silva
Team: A.C. Milan
Age: 27
Price Tag: Around 20 million pounds
Silva is another fantastic centre back who isn’t attainable. The Milan captain has great heading skills, height and also a good reading of the game. He is currently in the prime of his career and could be a great addition to the already fabulous Barcelona team. The only drawback is that Barca would have to pay hefty sum to lure the 27 year old away from San Siro.
B. Left Back: As a replacement for Eric Abidal
1. Gareth Bale
Team: Tottenham Hotspurs
Age: 22
Price Tag: Around 40 million pounds
Okay, so Bale maybe more efficient as a winger but he can play as left back too and would have enough time to develop himself as a world class wing-back at Barca. The 22 year old is an exciting and a flexible player and the best possible replacement for Eric Abidal. Again, Barcelona may have some problems in paying up his transfer value, which is around 40 million pounds.
2. Jordi Alba
Team: Valencia
Age: 22
Price Tag: 8-10 million pounds
Jordi Alba is a prominent Spanish defender who is a talented, committed and won’t cost Barcelona much of a fortune too. He is a key player in the Valencia line-up and also has also impressed with the Spain national
team. The 22 year old is seen as a possible replacement for Capdevilla and can also be seen as an excellent replacement for Eric Abidal at Nou Camp.
3. Adriano
Team: F.C. Barcelona
Age: 27
Why spend money for a player when you already have the replacement? Adriano may not be the ideal replacement for Abidal but if he is given more time on the pitch, the Brazilian can surely go on to become a
great left back. He has pace, skills and is only one of those rare footballers ambidextrous.
C. Striker: Cover up for David Villa who is injured.
1. Edinson Cavani
Team: Napoli
Age: 24
Price Tag: Around 30- 35 million pounds
Cavani is one of the best strikers available in the market. The 24 year old’s blistering performances have made him one of the most wanted players in Europe and it won’t be long before big-spending clubs like Manchester City, Real Madrid start pouring in with their bids to acquire the services of the 24 year old. With Villa out for the rest of the season, Barcelona may need a replacement for him and Cavani is one of the best options available.
2. Robin Van Persie
Team: Arsenal
Age: 28
Price Tag: Around 25 million pounds
Robin Van Persie is currently the best striker in the EPL. The 28 year old is in scintillating form and could take the La Liga by storm. The Dutchman could form a formidable partnership with Messi and Sanchez up front. The 28 year old has terrorised one defence after another this season and could be a great addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad.
3. Eden Hazard
Team: Lille
Age: 20
Price Tag: Around 30 million pounds
Eden Hazard is currently the best young talent in the world. The Belgium playmaker can play both as an attacker and a striker and has been heavily linked to clubs like Barcelona, United to name a few. He has everything that an ideal attacker should posses- pace, skills, creativity and a great technical ability. He is described as a ‘defender’s nightmare’ and is already being touted as the ‘next Lionel Messi’.
4. Isaac Cuenca
Team: F.C. Barcelona
Age: 20
Isaac Cuenca has been Barcelona’s break-through performer this season. With David Villa injured, this may be the best time for Cuenca to prove his worth and quality. His performances this season have been excellent especially against BATE Borisov in which he provided three assists.
Conclusion:
In my reckoning, Barcelona should buy a one or two defenders but spending money on a back-up for David Villa could be a mistake as players in January transfer window are surely going to be over-priced. Players like Cuenca, Jeffren should be given more chances up-front rather than spending money on buying a new attacker.
