Serie A is the greatest league in the World
By Sparky Hughes on Wed, 14/07.2010There you go. I've said it.
The Serie A is the best League in the World. Period.
Now before all you EPL, La Liga and Bundesliga fans, or anyone else for that matter thinks I'm smoking something, think again. Here are a few reasons as to why, based on the 2009/10 season, the Serie A is now the finest League in the world.
1] The Decline of the EPL
There's absolutely no doubt the the EPL has had a recent monopoly on world football. The best players, the most $$$ and a proven track record from it's competing teams in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) including an all-England Final in 2008 between Manchester United and Chelsea. But the 2009/10 season was different. Just take a look at the four English Clubs performance.
Chelsea made the 2nd Round, knocked out by eventual winners Inter (Italian) both in Milan (2-1) and in London (1-0). Manchester United were knocked out by Bayern Munich, the German champions and runners-up to Inter. Arsenal were also knocked out in the Quarter Finals by Spanish champions Barcelona, the same side that Inter then went on to beat in the Semi Finals. Liverpool didn't even make it out of the Group, finishing 3rd behind Lyon and Italians Fiorentina whom beat Liverpool both home (2-0) and away (2-1). Notice a pattern in that?
Not only that, in the EPL itself, while we've finally seen one of the 'Big 4' drop out in Liverpool and replacing it was Tottenham, in the EPL it's the same four Clubs always trying to keep up with the 'Big 4'. Those are Tottenham, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Everton or for the better word 'The Chasing 4'. There's absolutely no depth after that.
2] The Rise of the Serie A
There's no doubt Inter has dominated the Serie A the last five years. It all started with the Calciopoli scandal which really hit the Serie A and Italy hard, but they've recovered supremely well since then. The League might not boast the biggest stars, but it's still producing something which both the EPL and La Liga envy and that is while Inter are still winning the League, they're being challenged.
Just look at Juventus early in the season beating Inter 2-1 before their season took a spectacular fall for the worse. There was AC Milan who with five games to go were only a couple of points behind, even with Inter winning both Milan Derbies. Then you have Roma, whom despite a poor start and the sacking of Luciano Spalleti, the 'Tinkerman' Claudio Ranieri worked his wonders, getting Roma to 2nd and they really, had they not lost at home to Sampdoria with a couple of matches to go, won the Scudetto. In hindsight, a draw would have been enough.
But that's no where the Serie A leaves it's rivals behind, it's the other 16 teams. Unlike the EPL which has the same four teams challenging the 'Big 4', in the Serie A there are multiple teams trying for that 4th spot. This season was a battle between Sampdoria and Palermo, with Sampdoria getting it. Last season it was Fiorentina that edged Genoa. This season Fiorentina came 11th, Genoa 9th. That's the same Fiorentina side that had it not been for a shocking offside decision in the 1st League of the Champions League 2nd Round Tue with Bayern Munich, they in all likelihood would have made the Quarter Finals (They won 3-2 in the 2nd Leg. They also hadn't lost at home in the UCL that season). Then you have teams like Napoli getting better with each season, managing to hold onto their star players (Hamsik, Lavezzi, Gargano) and getting 6th and Europa League football next season. You also have Parma in 8th despite the troubles they've had over the years and Bari in 10th. Then you have perennial powers Juventus and Lazio finishing 7th and 12th although Lazio were in relegation trouble for almost the entire season. You just don't see things like this happen in any other League.
3] Italy 2-1 England Head-to-Head in Europe
If we have a look at recent seasons, English teams have thumped Italian teams in the Champions League. The 2009/10 season was different. Fiorentina took care of Liverpool, the same Fiorentina side that came 11th in the Serie A and was robbed of a Quarter Final spot in the UCL. Inter played Chelsea off the pitch in London and really, that 3-1 aggregate scoreline was rather misleading. The only exception was Manchester United doing the business on AC Milan. The same Milan side that has rarely changed over the last three years. An aging side that needs to be overhauled. So overall, Italian teams have got the wood on their English counterparts. Whether or not that stays the same in 2010/11 remains to be seen.

There is the fact though that
There is the fact though that Fulham, who finished 12th this season in the EPL came runners up in the Europa League final (beating Juventus on the way). Also despite Inter being pushed this year in the title it hasn't been as common for the title to go down to the wire in Serie A as it has in the EPL. In the last 4 years in Serie A the results are like this: 09/10 Inter by 2 pts, 08/09 Inter by 10 pts, Inter by 3 pts, 07/08 Inter by 22 pts (this was the year of all the point deductions, but no team that had points deducted would've got closer than this). In this same period in the EPL we had Chelsea by 1 pt, Man Utd by 4 pts, Man Utd by 2 pts and Man Utd by 6 pts. Showing that every one of the past 4 years the EPL title has been closer than the Serie A. And even if we compare the losses from the top 4 teams in each league this season we see a combined total of 27 losses from the serie a teams (average of 6.75 per team) compared to a combined total of 32 in the EPL (average of 8 per team). This would indicate a more even competition in the EPL where on any day teams can feel they have a chance of winning.
Of course, it is a matter of opinion which league is better, but I know which one I'll be watching come the start of the new season.
Thanks for the post. On the
Thanks for the post.
On the subject of Fulham making the Europa League Final and indeed beating Juventus on the way, one thing people forget, and it's why the Bundesliga was so close to taking Italy's fourth Champions League spot, it's because the UEFA Cup/Europa League is regarded by Italian teams as a mickey mouse competition.
Here's a little bit of history with Italian teams over the last five years in the UEFA Cup/Europa League and compare it with German sides at the Round of 16 stage:
2005/06 - Italian: 2 - German: 2
2006/07 - Italian: 0 - German: 2
2007/08 - Italian: 0 - German: 4
2008/09 - Italian: 1 - German: 2
2009/10 - Italian: 1 - German: 3
So as you can see, over the last five years, there's only been 4 Italian teams that have made the Round of 16 over the last five years in this second rate competition. Comparing that to German teams, which have a staggering 13 teams.
On the EPL, after the top 8 teams, the depth is poor. The Serie A depth is much stronger. You only need to look at teams like Lazio and Udinese that struggled to survive last season.
I think in terms of quality,
I think in terms of quality, La Liga beats the Serie A. While most Serie A sides boost a lot of Italian players, it is worth nothing that Inter hardly have any italian players yet they are by far the best Serie A side at the moment. AC Milan are yet to replace Kaka while the likes of Juventus have been very dissapointing. Indeed the lack of depth in Italian football was showcased in South Africa. One Italian youngster however who could set the world alight is Mario Balotelli. Why he was left out of the squad for South Africa is beyond me.
The Serie A is definitely on
The Serie A is definitely on the way back. I don't think it is better than the EPL or La Liga, but it is certainly catching them. Inter Milan were a standout last season, and Roma were impressive, but other teams, like AC Milan and Juventus were inconsistent. Whereas in the EPL there was a 7 way fight for the top 4, which is unusual, and broke the mould. I think we are seeing the affects of the economic crises affect the EPL now, which is evening up the competition a bit more, but not nessesarily detracting from it. Thing I like about the Serie A is that is it very open. Any team can win on any given day. Same as Bundesliga. Very much looking forward to the upcoming seasons.
Alan - Thanks for the
Alan - Thanks for the comment. To say La Liga is better than Serie A I really do struggle to fathom. Apart from Barcelona and Real Madrid, the depth just isn't there. Valencia are the only ones that could ever challenge those two, and due to their financial problems (much like almost every other team in La Liga) they've had to sell both David Villa (to Barcelona) and David Silva (to Man. City). In terms of quality, apart from the top two in La Liga, I just can't see how La Liga is better.
On the Italian youngsters, there's many coming through and now that Cesare Prandelli has taken the reigns from Marcello Lippi, we'll start to see this. The only reason why no youngsters where chosen by Lippi for the 2010 FIFA World Cup was because he has far too much trust in old players (Cannavaro, Zambrotta, Gattuso, Iaquinta, Cameronasi). With Prandelli now taking over, youngsters like Balotelli, Rossi, Santon, Giovinco, Aquafresca Andreolli,Bonucci and Ranocchia plus also Montolivo who played at the 2010 World Cup and did quite well.
Amos - Thanks for the comment. Interesting reading. AC Milan finishing 3rd last season was as good as they were going to do considering their owner Silvio Berlusconi just doesn't want to spend. Add to that, they did sell their best player Kaka but that was the right thing, economically anyway. As for Juventus, they started out last season brilliantly. They were 2nd at one point, and beat Inter Milan 2-1 in Turin. It was only once they were beaten 4-1 in Turin by Bayern Munich which thus meant being knocked out of the Champions League which is when the downhill ride too place.
