Who wants Wayne Rooney?

By Alan Nicolea on Wed, 20/10.2010

Wayne Rooney’s time at Manchester United seems to be over following Sir Alex Ferguson’s confirmation that the England striker wants to leave the English Premier League club. With Rooney’s price tag at an estimated $A81 million, these are the six clubs with the best chances of signing him.

Chelsea FC

With Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka aged in their thirties, Chelsea will no doubt be interested in incorporating Rooney to their squad. At 24 years of age, you would like to think that Rooney’s best years are yet in front of him despite a huge lull in form over the past few months. With Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich still at the helm, Chelsea have the means to make a juicy offer for the England international. Whether they can match the dollars which will be offered elsewhere, in particular from Man City, remains to be seen. Regardless, the lure of playing at arguably England’s best Premier League club at present could be enough to see Rooney assume residency in London.

Arsenal FC

While the Gunners wouldn’t be able to break the bank for his transfer, from a footballing perspective, one believes Rooney would rediscover his best form under the guidance of Arsene Wenger, who has made a habit of moulding young talents into elite footballers. With creative superstars such as Arshavin and Cesc Fabregas in the squad, it wouldn’t surprise to see Rooney make the move to The Gunners, who themselves are struggling to fill the void left upfront by former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry. Although a move to Arsenal appears unlikely, Rooney would be foolish not to at least consider the option of playing in a side which could easily win the Premier League or Champions League in the coming seasons.

Manchester City

With Carlos Tevez having already left Old Trafford for Eastlands two seasons ago, the chances of Rooney following his former team-mate to City are substantial to say the least. Indeed Rooney and Tevez have a solid relationship with one another, with Tevez at one time proclaiming Rooney to be the best player in the world despite his Argentine heritage. Tevez’s stunning form reversal since arriving to City will also play a key role in luring Rooney, who has been warming the bench since news broke out of his current predicament. With City reportedly willing to offer over $A150 million for Rooney, it appears that the 24 year old appears destined to remain at Manchester, only this time, he won’t be a Red Devil.

Wayne is being a greedy prat.

Wayne is being a greedy prat. Where will he go that will match his ambitions?

I don't see Barca splashing the $$$ for him. Real may won't him with the Jose connection - though that isn't a long term move for Rooney as Mourinho is not a long term team manager - he is a 2-3 yr punch and run job.

Chelsea and Man City keen but I cannot see Ferguson or Man Utd alowing him to go to either of these - nor anyone in the prem.

Interesting you haven't included any of the Rumours of Bayern being interested - along with the persistent Real with Benzema and Diarra + $$$.

Tyler - Indeed I did mention

Tyler - Indeed I did mention Benzema's departure being a key factor in a possible Rooney move to Madrid. Diarra like you say is also another possibility. As for a move to Bayern Munich, I doubt Rooney would go there.. where did you hear about Bayern's interest? Personally I too think he is being a greedy prat. His form at present doesn't warrant a huge deal TBO.

I can't see Rooney leaving

I can't see Rooney leaving the north-west of England to be honest. I still think he is most likely to stay at Man U, but Man City would be my bet. Rooney can buy out his contract, so where Man U want him to go is irrelevant. If he goes anywhere abroad, it will only be to rejoin Ronaldo and work under Mourinho. Mind you, with Mourinho eying a spot at Man U once Sir Alex retires, does he really want Rooney leaving?
