Wigan, Derby & Charlton The Picks For This Weekend's English Football Treble

Following last weekend's International break, this weekend’s football treble come from one match taken from each of the top three divisions in England. As always, we look for a bit of value with our picks and find selections with odds that provide a good return, if all three win, the return is $15.81 with Victor Chandler.

Premier League

Wigan v Blackburn – Home Win @ 6/4 ($2.50)

Relegation beckons for both of these clubs even at this early stage of the season and it will beckon with a great deal more insistency for the losers of this match on Saturday afternoon. This match of course is an absolutely crucial one for both clubs; defeat would guarantee the losing side bottom place in the table, with every chance of them losing touch from the rest. Wigan of course are already at the bottom with just five points from eleven games, but know that with home advantage they can go above Steve Kean’s men with a win and that is the only result that they would settle for.

Winning however has been extremely difficult for Roberto Martinez and his team, who have lost their last eight Premier League matches and have not earned a point since their third game of the season when they beat QPR by 2-0 at home. Moreover, they have scored precious few goals too with only four in this current losing sequence and only seven in the league all season.

With such poor form it is difficult to make a case for Wigan to beat Blackburn, particularly as Steve Kean’s men come into the match with the slightly better form. Indeed Blackburn have drawn three times away from home this season including a very lively 3-3 draw a fortnight or so against Norwich.

However, their recent form at the DW Stadium has not been great with two defeats and just a draw to show for their last three league visits. They will be coming up against a hugely determined Wigan team who have had more than their fair share of bad luck on the pitch in recent games and who are long overdue a change in fortunes and that can come against a hapless Rovers.

A close game is anticipated with Wigan taking full advantage of being at home to get the points.

Championship

Derby v Hull – Home Win @ 7/4 ($2.75)

These two teams come together, level on points in the Championship table, with Derby in 8th place and Hull one place behind in 9th. However, crucially, Hull comes into the match having just lost their highly regarded manager, Nigel Pearson to Leicester and will be no doubt be a little jaded as a result. Nicky Barmby will be caretaking the team for the time being but he will need to have his team playing well to take any points away from this match.

They enjoyed an excellent unbeaten 9 match run, until losing away at Barnsley which they then followed up with defeat this time at West Ham. These results came at a time when Pearson was being actively pursued by Leicester which clearly affected performance. It is unlikely therefore, despite their excellent away record this season that they will not yet have got over his departure, hence the inclusion of a Derby home win in the treble.

Derby boss, Nigel Clough was a little angry to say the least at his team’s last home performance when they went down 0-3 to Cardiff. His mood did not get any better the following week, when they went down 2-3 at Peterborough, after the hosts stole the points with an injury time winner. Clough is now insistent Derby pick up from they left off before those two games and get back to their excellent game of all round football and starting each match with positive intentions.

League One

Brentford v Charlton – Away Win @ 13/10 ($2.30)

High flying Charlton are an excellent price of 11/8 to grab three away points at Brentford and having won their last five games in all competitions scoring 19 goals, who could possibly back against them with that sort of form and with those odds?

Brentford in fairness are also having a good season and have crept up to ninth place in the league, however home defeats by Stevenage, Huddersfield, Preston and Tranmere all confirm that they are vulnerable at Griffin Park.

A very good match in prospect but this one can only end with a win for the Addicks, probably by at least a couple of goals.
