World Cup - Quarter Final Premonitions

By Amos Rojter on Fri, 02/07.2010

Thirty-Two teams have become eight.  Four years of preparation has led these teams into a World Cup quarter final showdown.  The equation is simple, one team needs to win three straight games for the right to hold a ticker tape parade in their capital city.  A loss will re-direct the players’ line of sight toward the floor.  We are down to the very serious of World Football, the best of the best.  They can’t all win, but they can all try, and it starts with:

Netherlands V Brazil

Both teams have shown good form throughout the tournament, and it is a shame that one will be going home this early.  Rumours of in-fighting between Wesley Sneijder and Robin Van Persie do not bode well however, and Holland will need to be a completely unified team, for a chance to beat the world best from Brazil.  Question marks must also be asked of Holland’s defense, which has looked shaky at times.  There will be plenty of attacking on display, so expect to see some goals.

PREDICTION – Brazil 3-1

Uruguay V Ghana
These teams are lucky to have drawn each other, and both have a real chance of progressing.  This is definitely a matchup of the two weakest teams in the quarterfinals, and should be an interesting contest.  Ghana is probably lucky to have progressed through the group stage on goal difference.  Uruguay however, has been exciting to watch, and definitely deserve to be here.  It will be a close game.

PREDICTION – Uruguay 2-0

Argentina V Germany
There is no doubt Germany are an exciting young team in international football.  The way they dispensed of England was impressive.  They have some exciting players, and all eyes should be on Mesut Ozil for Germany.  Argentina however are in World Cup winning form, and are playing with raw passion, directly instilled in them by Maradona.  Carlos Tevez is starting to make his mark, fresh from a two goal outing.  This will be the ‘match of the round’, and should not be missed.  Expect to be sitting on the edge of your seat.

PREDICTION – Argentina 3-2

Paraguay V Spain
Probably the most lop-sided contest, however in no way a forgone conclusion.  Paraguay have been excellent, playing above themselves, whilst Spain have been quite the opposite.  Spain are, however, stating to peak at the right moment, and that should be worrying for all the other teams.  Fernando Torres needs to start firing, and Cesc Fabregas needs to get on the pitch.  Expect to see plenty of heart from Paraguay, in their first ever World Cup quarterfinal, but also expect to see Spain step it up.

PREDICTION – Spain 2-0

It is getting exciting, and the football is getting tenser.  This is what World Cup’s are all about.  We have had our two days break, it is time to revert back onto South African time, sit back, and enjoy the spectacle ahead.

PREDICTION – Diego Maradona to do twenty-four star jumps after first goal.
