Skies open for Day to dominate PGA Championship
Syndicated on Fri, 13/08.2010Australian Jason Day overcame his on-going battle with a chronic sinus infection to head a strong Australian challenge in the opening round at the PGA Championship in Wisconsin.
Day was up at 4:00am for his scheduled 7:00am tee time, but play was delayed more than three hours by morning fog at Whistling Straits on the shore of Lake Michigan.
When action finally started, the 22-year-old Queenslander quickly slipped into gear to shoot a 3-under-par 69 in relatively benign conditions.
"I drove the ball really nicely and hit a lot of good quality putts," Day said after a bogey at his final hole prevented him from sharing the clubhouse lead with American Bubba Watson and Italian Francesco Molinari, who shot 68.
Americans Matt Kuchar and Nick Watney as well as veteran Ernie Els also joined the leaders at 4-under before their rounds were brought to an early end due to poor light.
Els and Kuchar had completed 14 holes and Watney 11.
World number two Phil Mickelson was 1-under through his first 11 holes and will be one of 78 players to finish off their opening round tomorrow.
