Canada beat USA as Heighington pledges allegiance | Thebigtip

Canada has won the second leg of the Colonial Cup with an upset 18-16 victory over arch rivals the United States in Toronto. Despite the win, USA retain the Colonial Cup after winning the first leg in Philadelphia 18-2.

With the match airing on national television, the Wolverines sealed their first win over the Americans since 1993 with a late penalty goal from London Harlequins backrower Louis Robinson.

Canadian rugby league chairman Eric Perez was delighted with the win.

"It was a big step forward for us. We had a strong line up and home field advantage. Going into the game I was confident of winning the tie but maybe not the Cup - we're undefeated at home this summer."

Louis Tulio, Michael Garvey and Ian Elliott crossed for the USA while Danny Tupou and Robin Legault scored doubles for the home side.

Canada’s win comes on the back of a victory in July against Jamaica. The Wolverines now turn their attention to South Africa while the USA knuckle down for World Cup qualification matches.

Meanwhile, the USA, Jamaica and South Africa have announced their 30 man squads for the triangular World Cup qualifying matches in Philadelphia.

Jamaica have been bolstered with the news Danny Bravo, Jamal Chisholm (Leeds Rhinos), Karl Pryce (Wigan Warriors) and Ross Peltier (Huddersfield Giants) will join the side in Pennsylvania.

The Americans will have Castleford Tigers utility back Ryan McGoldrick in their side along with the Paulo brothers. Joseph from the Parramatta Eels and Junior from the Penrith Panthers respectively.

England have announced that inspirational Wests Tigers lock Chris Heighington has been picked in their squad for the Four Nations tournement in October. This comes only a week after Brisbane Broncos centre Jack Reed pledged his allegiance to the British.
