Smith Next To Fall As Kevin Is No Moore | Thebigtip

Like Matthew Elliott before him, Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs coach Kevin Moore has quit his post before the end of the 2011 season, thus becoming the latest coaching scapegoat in the NRL to be given his marching orders.

RLFC Chairman Ray Dib and Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg told Moore that his services would not be required post season 2011, with Greenberg admitting that “it was time to change.”

Former international and club stalwart Jim Dymock will immediately replace Moore and aim to rescue the Bulldogs 2011 season.

The Bulldogs currently sit in 11th position, and are just outside the top eight based on point’s difference.

The Belmore based club however has lost four of its past five matches, and look anything but premiership material.

Although Dymock’s appointment as caretaker coach may provide some early success for the Bulldogs, one cannot understand how Moore’s departure will turn around the club’s fortunes either this year or the next.

Indeed Moore is the latest in a long list of head coaches who have been deemed surplus to requirements, despite the fact that coaches like Moore have been relatively successful.

In his first year in charge, Moore led the Bulldogs to a preliminary final birth, barely a year after finishing with the wooden spoon in season 2008.

Recently departed Penrith Panthers coach Matthew Eliott led the Panthers to a 2nd place finish last season, despite having to contend with a horror injury toll.

And who can forget former Parramatta Eels coach Daniel Anderson? The former New Zealand Warriors coach led the Eels to the 2009 Grand Final, only to be kicked out 12 months later for not replicating his success with the club a year earlier.

Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith appears to be in the same boat as Moore and company.

After guiding the Roosters to the 2010 Grand Final, Smith’s coaching future looked secure. Now, one believes Smith will be the latest coaching scapegoat if he fails to guide a hapless Roosters outfit into the 2011 finals series.

With the guillotine falling on numerous high profile NRL coaches over the past 12 months, the margin of success and failure is very small in rugby league.

It seems now that a good season only guarantees a 12 month warranty for a head coach. A few losses to start the year however effectively puts a coach on the outer immediately.

Just ask Kevin Moore.
