Edinburgh secure home tie

By Philip Oliver on Mon, 23/01.2012

Edinburgh head coach Michael Bradley was delighted after seeing his side claim an all-important Heineken Cup bonus point victory against London Irish, securing the Scots a home quarter-final against Toulouse. Cardiff Blues needed a bonus point from their match against Racing Metro, but that proved elusive for the Welshmen and Edinburgh ensured it was them that topped Pool 2, earning a home quarter-final in the process.

First-half tries from Tim Visser and Jim Thompson, with two conversions from Greg Laidlaw, sent Edinburgh into the half-time break in control of the game against a London Irish side with nothing to play for. Netani Talei and Lee Jones went over late in the second half to wrap up the all-important bonus points, with Laidlaw adding two more conversions and a brace of penalties to his tally. People looking at the Heineken Cup Odds will have been impressed.

Jonathan Joseph's try and two penalties from Adrian Jarvis weren't enough for The Exiles to ever have a chance of getting back into the match, and it was the hosts who finished the match as the more dangerous of the two teams. London Irish had a number of opportunities to make the game a closer affair, only for a determined Edinburgh defence to stand strong and repel nearly everything that was thrown at them.

Head coach Bradley was clearly delighted with his team's performance, not to mention the added bonus of ensuring their quarter-final will be played in the capital.  Fans of Sports Betting should bear this in mind.

"To have won the group which gives us a home quarter-final is fantastic," he said.

"The boys were very, very good. They're delighted, they've worked hard for it."

"We controlled that game; very good first half then got a little bit wobbly halfway through the second half but closed it out fantastically well."

Reaching the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup could well be the catalyst for Edinburgh to put together a winning run in their stuttering RaboDirect PRO12 campaign.
