Weir thankful for call-up

By Philip Oliver on Tue, 17/01.2012

Duncan Weir hopes he can play some part in Scotland's Six Nations campaign after being named in Andy Robinson's 36-man squad for the competition.

The 20-year-old fly-half missed the 2008-09 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury while at Cambuslang but has managed to revitalise his career since moving to Glasgow Warriors 18 months ago.

He has impressed for Scotland Under-20s but admits it will be difficult to earn a place in the senior team ahead of Ruaridh Jackson and Dan Parks. Those looking at the best England Scotland rugby online will be keeping an eye on things.

Weir said: "I would love to get on and play, but there's Ruaridh Jackson and Dan Parks in there, who are both experienced number tens but, if the chance comes, I would love to take it.

"Everything has gone amazingly with the Scotland under-20s and then getting the professional contract with Glasgow, and having an alright first season despite having a bad injury throughout.

"But this season has been really good. It's been good to get some more game time, and that's helped me become more comfortable."

Meanwhile, the Scottish Rugby Union are not ready to give up their fight for Steven Shingler.

The SRU have been advised that the 20-year-old London Irish player, who was named in Robinson's Six Nations squad, cannot play for any country other than Wales.
They are keen to ask the International Rugby Board's Regulations Committee to formally consider his eligibility, as they believe Shingler can play for Scotland due to his Dumfries-born mother.

The Welsh Rugby Union said that Shingler could not play for another country after he featured at full-back for Wales Under-20s against their French counterparts last year.
