Day 8 Wimbledon Picks
By Mark Skendaris on Tue, 29/06.2010We are down to the last eight in the women’s singles at Wimbledon. Find out TennisMan’s thoughts on tonight’s quaterfinals at SW19.
Clijsters (1.22) v Zvonareva (4.00)
Clijsters powered past Henin yesterday in a dominant display while Zvonareva overcame a disappointing Jankovic. This pair is evenly matched and both possess the ability to club numerous winners so it should be an exciting contest. The Belgian has a 5-0 head-to-head lead in the series so I’m leaning towards her. When it gets tight Clijsters should have enough experience to get past the temperamental Russian. Kim in two tough sets.
S. Williams (1.20) v Na (4.25)
This will probably be the highest quality match of the day. Both women are in supreme form but Williams will once again come out on top. Serena’s serving effort against Sharapova yesterday was outstanding and helps her claim numerous wins. Na hammered Radwanska last round but this will be a tougher ask. She is in career best form, but has only captured one victory in the pair’s previous five meetings. It may go to three, but the top seed will storm into the semis.
Pironkova (6.30) v V. Williams (1.10)
The Bulgarian has shocked everyone with her effort to reach the last eight, but surely this is one hurdle too high for her to climb. Venus was fortunate to get home in straights yesterday against Groth so I think she will be a little more switched on today for this encounter. The series is locked at 1-1 but Williams feels right at home here and should dispose of a brave Pironkova in two sets.
Kvitova (1.50) v Kanepi (2.50)
The two unlikely last eight opponents square off, the toughest match of the day to call. They have met three times, Kanepi winning twice and they have all gone the distance. Kvitova won their last match-up this year in Memphis and I think she can do it again today. Anyone who dismantles Wozniacki like she did is not to be taken lightly and her serve looks very formidable. I think it will go to three sets but the Czech can make the last four if she holds it together at the end. Kvitova to edge a close nervy contest.
Best bet:
I think Clijsters and S. Williams are certain to get through. Can’t go wrong with a double there. Get about $1.45.
A value bet may be to take Clijsters, S. Williams and V. Williams in straight sets, added with Kvitova. Price of $2.97.
Good luck again Tennis punters!
