Fresh players with the advantage at Cincinnati Masters 1000
By Sparky Hughes on Mon, 16/08.2010This week's Tournament is the Masters 1000: Western & Southern Financial Group Masters in Cincinnati.
It's the second Masters 1000 tournament in a row after the Rogers Cup in Toronto last week. Roger Federer returns to Cincinnati after his 2009 triumph to be greated by a very strong field, with the top 8 ranked players all playing. Hopefully the tennis is as good this week as it was in Toronto, where we saw some fantastic matches.
Predictions:
First Quarter - Rafael Nadal ($4.70 for Tournament) - While there is a couple of dangerous players in this quarter of the draw, Nadal should be too strong. He looked pretty good in Toronto, and will look to go one step further in Cincinnati. It's the only Masters 1000 tournament where he has never reached the Final. A Quarter Final against Tomas Berdych is probably the only banana skin game.
Second Quarter - Roger Federer ($5.60) - The defending champion returns to Cincinnati with his World No. 2 ranking back. He's also coming off an appearance in the Final in Toronto. I think he should be far too good in this part of the draw. Monfils, Kohlschreiber and Davydenko are the three men capable of beating him, but I can't see it happening this week.
Third Quarter - Andy Murray ($4.30 favourite) - Even though he might be a tad fatigued after winning in Toronto, there is simply no one in this part of the draw that can stop Andy Murray. It's a quarter of the draw filled with players that usually disappoint.
Fourth Quarter - Andy Roddick ($46 outsider) - Andy missed the Masters 1000 in Toronto, hence his ranking dropping to World. No. 13, but I think this could serve him well in Cincinnati, a place where he's won twice already (2003 & 2006). It's also the toughest quarter of the draw, with Novak Djokovic, David Nalbandian, Robin Soderling and Lleyton Hewitt all featuring.
Semi Finals:
Nadal vs. Federer - Nadal in 3.
Murray vs. Roddick - Roddick in 3.
Final:
Nadal vs. Roddick - Roddick in 3.
I've gone with Andy Roddick ($46) to win in Cincinnati this week. I think being fresh after not playing in Toronto will do him the world of good, plus the top players around him, Djokovic, Murray, Nadal and Federer will all be a little fatigued.
