Rogers Cup semi-final predictions

By Mark Skendaris on Sat, 14/08.2010

$1.62 Rafael Nadal (ESP) v $2.30 Andy Murray (GBR)

TORONTO, Aug. 14, 2010 Rafael Nadal of Spain returns the ball during the men's singles match against Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada, on Aug. 13, 2010. Rafael Nadal won the match 2-1.

The world No. 1 recovered from a sluggish start to get over an inspired Kohlschreiber yesterday while Murray played some of the brilliant tennis we saw in the early stages of the year do dismantle the red-hot Nalbandian. The pair have met 11 times with the Spaniard victorious on eight occasions and I see no reason why he will not come out on top again here. The rallies in this match will be strung-out and repetitive which will suit Nadal down to a tee. Murray’s only chance of victory is too continually attack where possible and not be too passive from the baseline. If he can achieve this he can move into the final but I think Nadal’s mental toughness, along with his amazing forehand will see him get the job done over the Brit once again. Nadal in three sets.

$1.67 Roger Federer (SUI) v $2.20 Novak Djokovic (SRB)

TORONTO, Aug. 14, 2010 Roger Federer of Switzerland returns the ball during the men's singles match against Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada, on Aug. 13, 2010. Roger Federer won the match 2-1.

The Swiss maestro showed us he still has the game by overhauling Berdych last start while Djokovic took care of an all-at-sea Chardy in the late match. This shapes up as being the match of the tournament with both men so evenly matched. Federer possesses more flair than the Serb but not the top ability to grind out a point or two when required. Djokovic will feel his time of stamping his superiority over Federer is now and he will fancy his chances in this match. However, I still think the world No. 3 believes he can beat Djokovic more often than not and I’m tipping the champ to meet his old rival Nadal in the decider. He knows if you can attack Djokovic enough he can break down slightly and this will be enough to see him home. Fed in a three-set thriller.
