Britain - Success Starved and Suffering
By Amos Rojter on Sat, 03/07.2010He is Scottish again. Andy Murray has again strung a few good games, and with each win, England has not only claimed him as British, but turned the screws of pressure on the poor boy. The pressure has become too much of course, and Andy Murray has fallen over at the last hurdle. Return to sender. Good bye. Your not fit to represent Britain. He's Scottish!
This is no fault of Andy Murray. He is a proud Scotsman. At the 2006 World Cup, when asked who he would be supporting, he said "anyone but England". This caused outrage amongst English fans. It was unforgivable, how could he say such a thing? Then he starting winning, winning for Britain apparently.
England are so success starved in sport, that they will try anything to claim a win. You won't find a Scotsman, Ulsterman or Welshman supporting any England players, under the banner of 'Britain'. It is enough for them that they have to be "British" at the Olympics. They support there own to the death, and then they switch channels.
The English are some of the most fickle sports fans in the world. You only need to look at their treatment of Fabio Capello. Three weeks ago he was the messiah, now he is Englands worst ever coach, he isn't even English, he should go back to Italy, and so the vicious cycle goes on...
Andy Murray is not the best player in the world. He is a good player, a semi final standard player, and one day, he may even be a Grand Slam winner, perhaps even Wimbledon. But if that day comes, he will be a Scottish Grand Slam winner.
In the meantime, Rafael Nadal is set to conquer the grass again. He is from Spain, just in case there are any English out there ready to pounce with their British flag.
