A week in the life of a North Melbourne footballer is much more than a good performance on game day.On a windswept, freezing pre-winter day I stand at the Arden Street Oval with my good friend Kit Harvey, new North Melbourne Football Club media coordinator Chelsea Collins and North Melbourne youngster Jamie Macmillan. It is a pleasure to interview this young player and to share his story with fellow North and West Melburnians.Jamie Macmillan has played a few games since being picked up by North...
On Saturday I umpired my first senior match in the VAFA (Victorian Australian Football Association), Premier C at Glen Waverly between the Mazenod Old Boys and Ormond. One of my mates who is a field umpire got me into umpiring and as I love footy, it was a win-win situation. Plus, a little extra cash on the side is always handy. I’m a goal umpire. Goal umpiring is nothing to laugh about, we have to go to training each Thursday and run, practice signals, practise our positioning, flag waving...
145 1,138 Dreamteam - it's back! I love fantasy footy - you could say I'm a fanatic. I stayed up until midnight for the opening of Dreamteam and had my team already planned out months ago thanks to the FanFooty planner. I am now unleashing my team onto TheBigTip for the rest of the world to bask in its glory (touch wood no one gets injured before Round 1). This is my preliminary team but as you know there will be a ton of changes before Round 1. BacklineGoddard, Deledio and Gibbs seem to...
181 1,289 We are back! Finally our beloved game of Aussie Rules is back! The NAB Cup is not real footy but any footy is better than none, right? My Rooboys have been on the receiving end of numerous negative articles in 'The Age' recently. For example today, February 18th is the first time I have ever seen the first and second pages of the sports section of The Age contain every article about North Melbourne. Most of the criticism has been unfair but some of the content has some merit. It seems The Age's...
Local resident Tim Hunt is an up-and-coming professional boxer. He fights in the welterweight division and for those who don’t know what that is, it is for boxers weighing more than 63.5 kilos but not more than 66.7 kilos.Tim has risen through the ranks quickly and is currently the Victorian welterweight champion after defeating Aswin Cabuy on 19 November to take the crown. He defeated the highly touted Cabuy in eight rounds to become champion for the first time in his career. When asked about...
A woman behind the goals....the latest frontier. Chelsea Roffey is the second ever female AFL goal umpire and the only female listed umpire in the competition this year. Chelsea was appointed in 2004 after fellow goal umpire, David Morris, resigned during the season. Chelsea is a journalist when she is not umpiring and I was pleased to be able to recently interview her, and obtain some fascinating insights into the life of a (female) AFL goal umpire. Joseph: Firstly, How’s it going?...
After a week of talking about Michael Barlow’s horrific leg injury, I have spent some time musing on other serious injuries over the years, and have compiled a list of arguably the top 9 gruesome injuries in the AFL. There certainly have been some shockers and life threatening ones. 1. Neil Sachse (Spine) 1975 Neil Sachse was playing only his second game of VFL football for Footscray when he was left a quadriplegic after a sickening clash with Fitzroy player,...
9.30am. Dad and I were in the car, and off to the place they call the ‘Cattery’... a place opposition fans dread due to parking, reserve seating and habitual poor performances over the last 2 years. We were ready for a long road trip, accompanied by an optimistic belief that North could pull of the unthinkable and defeat the Cats in the Cattery. It took us about an hour and a half to drive down and we were very lucky to get a park near the ground. We organised our tickets with...
Shannon Motlop played AFL for both North Melbourne and Melbourne Football Clubs. His career began at the Kangaroos where he was selected with the 85th pick in the 1998 National Draft, and played 54 games including the 1999 Premiership. After his time at Arden St, he played 10 games for Melbourne between 2005 – 2006.Joseph: How’s it going Shannon, what have you been doing with yourself after football?Shannon: I moved back to Adelaide and then to Darwin for a bit but ended up moving to...
Half the season has gone and haven’t we had some surprise packets? I’ve chosen not to include 2009 draftees in the list but selected a list of players who have burst onto the scene this season and have surprised the footballing public. Here is my list. 1. Jack Riewoldt (Richmond) Just come off a bag of ten against the ‘Weagles’, Jack Riewoldt has finally given Richmond supporters something to cheer about. He rarely gets beaten in a one on...
Hi, I'm Joseph
I'm 17 years old, currently living in Melbourne.
I'm a North Melbourne fan and attend as many games as possible. I'm currently in VCE and looking to work in the sports industry when I leave school. I follow mostly AFL and cricket but like most sports in general.
I hope you enjoy my work on the Big Tip.
Feel free to leave a comment.
Cheers
Joe
