The soon to be 17th team in the AFL has released their name and uniform to general ambivalence. Is it just me, or does it seem like no one really cares? No doubt the Jason Akermanis story ambushed their carefully planned launch and averted the attention of the footy community. But even still, as much as the AFL and GC17 has tried to inject hype and enthusiasm into the new franchise, we're being left a little cold. Could it be resentment caused by the generous concessions they've been afforded...
By Rhys Harwood Round 11, Saturday June 5, 4.40pm. Carlton fans are proudly bellowing out the Famous club song for the 7th time in just 11 rounds, having just disposed of the Melbourne Football Club with relative ease. An air of confidence, and perhaps even arrogance, emanates amongst the faithful, and more importantly the players and coaching staff. The Blues were ‘back’, after a nightmare period lasting 8 years and culminating in three wooden spoons, and just one finals appearance...
Below is a picture I took yesterday of the Galle Cricket Ground in Sri Lanka while on holiday. Murali will play his final Test Match here and in it, attempt to take the 8 wickets required to be the first man to achieve 800 Test scalps. Galle Test to be Muralitharan's last, from Cricinfo.com Muttiah Muralitharan, the leading wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs, will retire from Test cricket after the first Test against India in Galle, which begins on July 18. While he will not play the subsequent...
Michael Barlow's amazing debut season is over courtesy of a broken leg. He has truely become a favourite of ours this year and we look forward to seeing him back out there in 2011. I have no doubt we will be criticised for publishing this footage, but after a few weeks of watching soccer players rolling around on the ground with 'injuries,' seeing Mick get straight up on his feet with a horrifically broken leg reminded us of what sets our code apart. Barlow showed amazing courage and we wish...
Horseracing in July. Slow tracks, icy temperatures, sideways rain, freezing punters and second rate horses. If you follow the so called expert tipsters as I do, you'll know that its nigh impossible to pick a winner in the current climate. If you're a smart punter, you'd stay away. Keep your powder dry for a few weeks and wait for Spring to be sprung and with it some quality animals. As punters go, my IQ matches the current forcast high temperature in Melbourne, so I think I can find some winners...
Setanta O'hAilpin is already one of the stories of season 2010. After the media frenzy created by Fevola's departure and the predicted demise of the Blues as a result, Setanta epitomises Carlton's season so far - expectations that have been exceeded beyond anyone’s judgment. Although the job for O’hAilpin and the Blues is far from over, given the amount of discussion surrounding coverts from other codes coming into the AFL, it’s worth visiting Setanta’s amazing journey...
We saw this over at the Bleacher Report and it made us laugh enough to want to feature it here. Check out the '6 World Cup Coaches Who Look Like James Bond Villains,' by Zach Dundas EVEN IF YOU'RE not a huge soccer fan, the World Cup offers many rich sources of entertainment. One hugely underappreciated source of World Cup jollies can be found in its plethora of strange and terrifying coaches. For some reason -- possibly an unfamiliar combination of jock couture, lifelong cigarette...
Rampant one-upsmanship has made the lives of attention craving footballers in the AFL more difficult. It’s now just not enough to pull on a pair of white boots, get a $90 haircut and spend 3 sessions a week on the electric beach. Everyone’s doing that. So how do modern day athletes and establish their individuality and stand out from the others? Tattoos. This is a list of the worst tattoos in the AFL and the people who are branded with them. Send through any I've missed, there are plenty.1...
From Adelaide Now. ADELAIDE is in crisis on and off the field after a black day at the MCG yesterday. A shock 16-point defeat to perennial wooden spooner Melbourne left the Crows winless, while injuries to four key players - All-Australian centre half-back Nathan Bock, star forward Kurt Tippett, rising ace Patrick Dangerfield and unlucky forward Trent Hentschel - have left the club facing a mountain to climb just to make the AFL finals, let alone the much-stated top four. How do you...
It seems the money has begun to come in for Fremantle after their second unexpected win for the season. Freo were outstanding against a poor Bombers team and arguably the biggest winners of the weekend. A far more meaningful indictation for punters was that the win occured in Melbourne, approx 4,000kms from usual. It was a case of the geography being far more impressive than the opposition. As a result the Dockers have shortened from $4.50 to make the 8 to $2.75. Last week Glen Jakovich...
