The 6 Test match Aussie summer has drawn to a close. Looking back on where Australia were this time last summer, we were all in a state of mourning, ruing the loss of the urn to the old foe. To say now that 12 months on and the change has been dramatic would still be understating the obvious. We all wondered, "How could such a devastating fall from grace occur?" Everyone seemed to have an opinion on how and why it happened. Theories were being debated and fingers were being pointed in every...
It has now been 4 long years since we waved goodbye, with a tear in our eye to some greats of our game. Warne, McGrath, Langer, Gilchrist. Between now and then we have also seen the departure of Hayden, Gillespie, Lee, Katich, S.Clark, and Symonds. All long term servants that gave their all to the Baggy Green. 4 years on and what has changed. You could argue that 4 years on from such depletion of talent and stock is more than enough time for Australian cricket officials to sift through the...
The pyjama party is in full swing at the moment in South Africa. As a cricket tragic, all I can say is "when does the real stuff fire up?"Australia have only played 2 lack lustre tests (Sri-Lanka) since the Ashes disaster of last summer. With 8 tests to be played over the course of the next 3 months against quality opposition (NZ questionable), some lingering post ashes questions will now hopefully be answered. When the 15 man test squad was announced, few eyebrows were raised until the name Pat...
Remember the good old days? A trip to the footy cost no more than a couple of bucks at the gate, you could sit or stand where ever you liked, beer came in cans and cost about a dollar, and if you couldn't make it to the footy, you could stretch out on the couch and watch the match of the day. That's right, match of the day.As an ex-Victorian living in Queensland and supporting a Victorian based team, I have always been prepared to not see my team play on the TV every week. However, If the Lions...
All the conspiracy rumours have been laid to rest and it now seems that finally sanity has prevailed. It would not be a State of Origin build up without high drama. The John Thurston vs Judiciary saga was drama instalment number one in the build up to Origin III. The decision to clear JT was clearly the right one and now, injury pending, we will get the two best teams across the park to go head to head. The contact with officiators rule was brought into the National Rugby League this...
Ever since May the 1st, I have been hearing this question doing the rounds in all media outlets and quite frankly, I'm bemused at some of the answers I have been hearing. "Is Chris Judd the greatest footballer ever to pull on the navy blue"? To my astonishment, the general consensus seems to be an overwhelming "Yes".Now I am not a Carlton fan, but I do admire the abilities of the modern day great and Chris Judd certainly fits the bill. But to say that he is the best Carlton player of all is a...

Is there such a thing as good arrogance and bad arrogance? I would never have believed it, however, the more we see jaded sports people clinging to what little they have left to offer, highlights that maybe there are varying degrees of arrogance.Cases in point. The "Waugh" era of Australian cricket oozed arrogance. What Steve Waugh brought to the Australian dressing room was a level of confidence and ruthlessness not seen since the Bradman era. A healthy combination of fierce competitiveness,...

And another team coming off a bye bites the dust. One would think that in a fierce competition such as the AFL where the physical demands on the players are almost at tipping point, the bye would be welcomed; not only to rest the battered and bruised body whilst watching everyone else get knocked about chasing leather, but to also freshen up the body and mind to help prepare for the rest of the season's mini-battles. Since the season began, the dreaded bye has claimed many victims in the...
When it comes to sport, I don't just shoot from the hip, I shoot from the knees, the elbows and also the tounge. It has been said that the Hon Dalai Lama has sought my council prior to lodging his AFL tips (I don't beleive this to be true as I have never spoken to the guy), I taught Shane Warne how to bowl a decent leg break (he learnt how to text message entirely on his pat malone) and I once came close to donning the yellow guernsey in a one off test against the Barbarians (they went with Matt Dunning because his head was slightly larger than mine). I don't want to sound like I'm blowing my own bugle but I do like to have a red hot crack when it comes to my sporting beefs and a red hot poke at those who warrant one. Cheers.
