Tiebreaker Tension At US Open
41 401

Now that Masters 1000s are only best of three sets, the US Open is the only tournament that uses a tiebreaker in the 5th set.  This can result in the most tense of situations, perhaps the most famous being Pete Sampras' 9-7 final set tiebreaker win against Alex Corretja in the quarter-finals of the 1996 event. Sampras went on to win the championship that year. This article looks at other big matches decided by a final set tiebreaker as well as the top 40's record in these situations (...

Montreal Madness: Biggest Upsets Of 2011
11 310

Last week in Montreal saw two big upsets before the 3rd round was reached. Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray had both won the Masters event in Canada two times previously: Nadal in 2005 and 2008, and Murray was the two time defending champion. Nadal let slip a 6-1 3-1 lead to lose 6-1 6-7 6-7, while Murray was humiliated 6-1 6-3. Both of their conquerors, Ivan Dodig and Kevin Anderson respectively, lost in the next round. Where do these upsets rate with the other big shocks of the season? The...

Tsonga Tames Tomic, Continues French Charge
01 203

France currently has four players in the world top 16 of the men's rankings, and each is experiencing a hot streak in recent weeks and months. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga continued the trend with a convincing 6-3 7-6(1) win over Bernard Tomic, the only Australian in the draw of the Masters 1000 in Montreal Canada this week. The following table shows some key statistics of the top four Frenchmen. Player Age Titles Ranking (career high) Win-Loss Record Since Start of Hot Streak*...

Pecking Order At Montreal
00 222

There have been great ranking divides between the very top players and the rest of the field in recent years on the ATP tour. In 2004 Roger Federer dominated in a way that hadn't been seen in years. The following year Rafael Nadal joined Federer in completely dominating the tour on all surfaces (Nadal primarily on clay and Federer in the other events). This one-two punch continued through 2006 and 2007. A new force, Novak Djokovic, was showing great promise in 2007 and by the time he...

Compulsory Canada
00 139

The sixth Masters 1000 event of 2011 starts next week in Montreal, Canada. Every year as this particular tournament approaches, I can't help but think that it should be non-compulsory. There are nine Masters 1000s tournaments on the ATP calendar and there has been since the series inception in 1990. All these events are compulsory for players ranked high enough for direct entry, except Monte Carlo. The first clay Masters 1000 lost its compulsory player commitment in 2009 despite being one of...

Djokovic 2011 - Best Ever Start to a Season?
60 1,667

In winning the Australian Open and Dubai and making the final of Indian Wells, Djokovic has compiled a perfect 17-0 record this year. That represents arguably the best start to the year in the history of the ATP tour (since 1990). Up until this year, every player had lost at least one match in the year up to the final of Indian Wells (provided they played both the Australian Open and Indian Wells). The best starts to the season since 1990 are shown below (maximum one loss before final of Indian...

Youngest and Oldest Top 10 Players
161 1,625

There was considerable interest when I posted the youngest new top 100 players (since 1995) last week (see list here) so this week I'm going to look at the youngest and oldest new top 10 players (complete list next page).   The most recent addition to the top 10 is Jurgen Melzer. When the Austrian cracked the top 10 on the 31st of January this year aged 29 and 8 months, he became the oldest first time top 10 player between 1984 and the present. The next oldest player to crack the top...

Winning Streaks to Start a Season
73 1,553

My recent article ' Djokovic 2011 - Best Ever Start to a Season?' showed that Novak Djokovic's year to date record could be considered the best from 1990 onwards. This article goes a step further and looks at the longest winning streaks to start a year in earlier years.   Djokovic's 18-match winning streak to start the 2011 season is the longest since Ivan Lendl's 29-match unbeaten run at the beginning of 1986 (see paragraph after first table for conditions). Follows is a table of...

Young Guns Make Their Mark
31 1,183

The year 2009 marked the worst the under 21 age category has ever performed on tour. Not since ATP rankings began in 1973 had there failed to be a teenager in the year end top 100, that was, until, 2009. That year's end of December rankings featured not a single teenager, furthermore, not a single 20 year old. The youngest player in the top 100 last year was Marin Cilic at 21 and 3 months old. Compare this to previous years where there have been at the very least 5 players under 21 in the year...

Controversial Tomic Ditches Dallas
91 1,043

Bernard Tomic has been involved in  several suspect incidences in his short career and last week he added another in Texas. One of the more notable occurrences was his temporarily suspension  from ITF events for walking off court mid-match against a fellow Aussie in December 2008. In terms of media coverage, his biggest controversy to date was when his team refused a practice hit with top ranked Australian Lleyton Hewitt at the 2009 Wimbledon championships.  More recently, Tomic...
