This week on the ATP tour we get three ATP tournaments, all of them 250 level events. The US Open Summer Series continues in Los Angeles this week, where defending champion Sam Querrey will miss the tournament with an injury and will fall to around #70 in the World. Mardy Fish is the #1 seed here, fresh off his victory in Atlanta. The real intrigue in Los Angeles this week, though, is the no.2 seed Juan Martin Del Potro. The Argentine makes his return to the US summer hard courts, not having...
There are two ATP World Tour tournaments this week. There is a 500 level in Hamburg as the post-Wimbledon European clay court swing continues. There is also a 250 level in Atlanta, the beginning of the US Summer Series on hard courts. If you want to start sizing up potential dark horses for the US Open this year, look no further than Atlanta this week.Hamburg presents us with a 48-player draw and quite a good one at that. 16 first-round byes for the seeds leave us with some mouth-watering...
1. No More Excuses: Not that he needed to prove anything extra, but hopefully Djokovic has now silenced all doubters. All year long people were pointing out milestones that Djokovic had not yet passed against Nadal. Even after winning the Australian Open it was all about how Djokovic had still never beaten Nadal in a final. After Indian Wells he had never beaten Nadal in a clay final. After Madrid he had never beaten Nadal in a major. Haters will always hate, but hopefully this will...
Move on over, Andy Roddick. There's a new kid in town for American tennis. We all knew that Ryan Harrison had the potential to be something special when we saw him fight at the US Open last year. We were impressed by his ability in various tournaments throughout this year. We loved his fight when he was overmatched against Robin Soderling at the French Open but took a set anyway. We knew the kid would bloom sometime, but the question was when he'd would have the mental fortitude to really...
It is very hard before a Grand Slam to say how it will affect the rankings for most players because there are just so many players and so many points at a Slam. Anyone in the top 60 right now could move very close to the top 10 with a miracle run to the final. Now, no one ever expects players ranked that low to reach a Grand Slam final, but it just goes to show how much impact the Slams can have on the rankings. If World #60 Mikhail Kukushkin were to reach the fourth round, a much more...
There is quite a bit of confusion as to how the seeding is done at Wimbledon. A lot of people are outraged every year at what they view is the All-England Club trying to mess over certain players or fix the draw. So we will lay out the seeding here and then look a little into the implications it has for this year. Wimbledon uses a formula to seed the men's tournament. First of all, only the top 32 in the ATP rankings can be seeded (assuming no withdrawals before the event). To determine the...

To start, we have to give great props to our project of interest this season, Fabio Fognini, for winning what most likely will go down as the match of the whole tournament, let alone the fourth round. The first four sets of his match against Albert Montanes were played at a very high level, with players trading great shots and points back and forth. Towards the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth sets, Fognini looked a little slowed but still played through it. Montanes had...
Well, no one has figured out how to do it so far this year. So before we look at who in his quarter of the draw even has a chance, let's think about just what it would take to pull off this upset. 1. Protect your serve: It's harder on clay, but to even give himself a chance against Djokovic a player cannot trade breaks. Andy Murray tried that and nearly succeeded in Rome, but eventually Djokovic won out. Opponents will have to take the match one game at a time and start out by trying to not let...
Well, we are finally down to the last week before the rankings will determine the seeds for the French Open. There are still two more tournaments (at the same time) between Rome and Roland Garros, but since the draw for Roland Garros is made before the tournaments in Nice and Dusseldorf end, the rankings that come out after Rome will be used. Novak Djokovic has clinched the #2 spot at Roland Garros with his run to the quarter-finals here in Madrid. He has not yet lost a match this year...
Just a fan of the great individual competition that is men's tennis.
